Hunsinger, Klager, Osmond, Evers, and Hils Take Victories at Ohsweken

by Tommy Goudge (May 30, 2008), Ohsweken, Ontario –
Despite cloudy skies and pessimism from the weather man, as Trailers By Jim Bray Round 3 of Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken Speedway was completed in its entirety on Friday night. Great racing, first time winners, and winners who lined up on the inside of row 2 were the order of the evening.

In Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car action, Hamilton’s Ryan Hunsinger (Sprint Car #77x) took home his first career sprint car feature win after a late race charge saw him pass race-long leader Rob Pietz (Sprint Car #69) with just 2 laps left to run in the 20 lap feature. The race began with Dave Dykstra (Sprint Car #5d) and Pietz on the front row, and it was Pietz getting the early lead, which he would hold for the majority of the race. Behind Pietz, the action was fast and furious throughout the pack as Kyle Patrick (Sprint Car #42), Fred Cade (Sprint Car #12c), Kevin Job (Sprint Car #21x), and Jared Zimbardi (Sprint Car #35) all began making moves towards the top 5. “The Gunslinger” Hunsinger started in the 3rd spot and jockeyed for position in the top 5 for the majority of the race before suddenly coming alive with 5 laps to go, first disposing of Cade in turn 2, and completing his charge to the front by passing Pietz coming out of turn 4. Pietz settled for 2nd, matching his career best at Ohsweken, while Patrick, Cade, and Job rounded out the top 5. Zimbardi, who entered Friday as the points leader in the sprint car divison, took home a solid 6th place finish, just ahead of 2nd place point man Keith Dempster (Sprint Car #5). The race was slowed just once as the #71 of Craig Downie got pointed the wrong way coming out of turn 2, with many skilled evasive manoeuvres performed by his fellow competitors enabling Downie to continue and eventually take home a 12th place finish.

Heat race wins went to Glenn Styres (Sprint Car #0), Cade, and Dempster. The B-Main was scratched in order to move the show along under threatening skies. A total of 23 Corr/Pak Sprinters signed in for action on Friday night, with 22 making the call to start the feature. John Burbridge, Jr. (Sprint Car #31) unfortunately suffered mechanical difficulties in hot laps and scratched for the evening. His father John Burbridge, Sr. (Sprint Car #21j) hopes to be back on the track soon after a similar problem on opening night. Jamie Collard (Sprint Car #f37) was seen in the pits helping various crews and hopes to be in action later this season.

The Modified Lite Star Championship Tour North made the first of 2 scheduled stops at Ohsweken on Friday night with a fine field of 18 of the ultra-fast “mini-modifieds” on hand. Josh Sliter and Rick Brubacher paced the field to the green flag to begin the 20 lap feature, but the yellow flag appeared repeatedly in the first half of the event. The second half of the feature went caution free, and it was the #1 of Paul Klager quickly asserting himself out front to take a lead he would never relinquish, while the #53 of Jamie Gilbert and #28 of Adam Murphy made their way to 2nd and 3rd place finishes after starting 8th, and 10th respectively, with Shawn Sliter and Josh Sliter rounding out the top 5. Entertaining heat race wins went to Josh Sliter and Brubacher. The Mod-Lites will return to Ohsweken’s Friday Night Thunder on August 22.

Another good field of 18 ESSO Thunder-Stocks entered the pits on Friday night with Kyle Magrin (Thunder Stock #24k) and Gord Bates (Thunder Stock #191) making their first appearances of 2008. Shayne Pierce (Thunder Stock #88) and Mike Thorne (Thunder Stock #55) brought the field to green, but all eyes were on the #777 of Cody McPherson, who quickly charged into the top 5 after starting 10th on the grid. Meanwhile, Terry Osmond drove his #40 into the lead and opened a slight advantage, but the young lions McPherson and Pierce kept pace and dogged Osmond for the entire event. Pierce dove under Osmond in turn 2 on the white flag lap, but couldn’t get enough traction in the bottom groove to get by Osmond’s #40, as Terry picked up his first feature win of 2008, after taking his first career win last season. Ryan Dinning (Thunder Stock #8) and Jamie Cox (Thunder Stock #044) rounded out the top 5. 2nd place points man Vince Fargnoli (Thunder Stock #55f) salvaged a last place finish in his heat by charging from the tail of the feature grid to 7th when the checkered flag came out. Brad Bacher (Thunder Stock #3), who entered the night just 2 points behind Fargnoli, spun while running 6th in the feature, but managed to come back to finish 10th at the end, minimizing the damage to his points position. Heat wins went to Bacher and Pierce.

19 ESSO Mini-Stocks were on hand for round 3, with Chase Hess (Mini-Stock #7x) and Mike Peterson (Mini-Stock #4p) on the front row at the start of the 15 lap feature, but it was the #265 of Mike Evers who charged into the lead quickly and never looked back. Behind him, Mitchell Brown (Mini-Stock #10) and Abe Castelein (Mini-Stock #28) – 2nd and 1st respectively in points entering the evening – were picking their way to the front from their starting spots in the 6th row. Brown finished the feature in 2nd followed by Chase Hess, Dan Stewart (Mini-Stock #27), and Castelein rounding out the top 5. Heat race wins went to Chase Hess, Mike Peterson, and Brent Hill (Mini-Stock #397).

2 more Fun Stocks were in the pits this week, bringing the total to 6 and doubling the field that ran the first Fun Stock feature on opening night. At the end of 25 laps on the “little O” in Ohsweken’s infield, newcomer Dave Hils and his #18 were found in victory lane. He was chased by last week’s feature winner Lee Hils for much of the event, but pulled away for a comfortable victory as the laps waned down. Karl Sault – opening night feature winner and point leader entering the evening – did not finish the event.

Friday Night Thunder resumes next Friday, June 6 when Lone Wolf Pit Stop presents another action packed 4-division event featuring the Corr/Pak Winged Sprints, ESSO Thunderstocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Fun Stocks. Bergeron, MacPherson, Brown, and Hils take Round 2 Victories at Ohsweken

by Tommy Goudge (May 23, 2008), Ohsweken, Ontario – St. Pie, Quebec’s Alain Bergeron made a long trip well worth it on Friday night as he passed Jared Zimbardi for the feature win on the last circuit of the 20 lap Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature during Round 2 of Friday Night Thunder presented by Iroquois Poker at Ohsweken Speedway. Cody MacPherson continued his hot start by picking up his second ESSO Thunderstock feature in a row, while 15 year old Mitchell Brown won his first feature in ESSO Mini-Stock action, and Lee Hils became the second winner in the new Fun Stock division

28 cars filed entries for Round 2 of the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, with Bergeron a new visitor this week from his hometown of St. Pie, approximately 1 hour East of Montreal. Bergeron’s evening almost ended prematurely in hot laps when the 8b began smoking heavily, but Alain’s crew got things fixed in time for his heat, in which he finished 3rd and became eligible for the redraw for feature starting positions.

Brad Malloy and John Riegling brought the field to the green flag to begin the 20 lap feature event, with Riegling taking the early lead. Jared Zimbardi made his presence known early on as he advanced from his 8th starting position to 3rd in just the first 2 corners. Bergeron fell in behind Zimbardi’s #35 and the two began a race-long battle, while also chasing the #5m of Malloy and Riegling’s #1a. Malloy got past Riegling near the midway point of the feature and it appeared for a time that Brad and the #5m would visit victory lane for the first time, but an untimely caution period proved to be his undoing as Rob Pietz (#69) and Louie Carufel (#47x) came together and made contact with the wall entering turn 3. Both machines suffered extensive front end damage in the incident, which also dropped Pietz in the point’s standings after a fine 4th place finish on opening night.

On the restart, Zimbardi was too strong for Malloy to hold off and the #35 set sail out front, but Bergeron quickly followed and began to apply pressure to Zimbardi for the lead. The two drivers waged an exciting duel at the front of the field and were involved in a side-by-side wheel banging incident as they crossed the start/finish line with 2 laps to go, but kept going at full speed. The battle was interrupted twice on lap 19 as first the #0 of Glenn Styres came to a halt in turn 4, and then on the restart a chain reaction incident coming out of turn 2 involving the #5 of Keith Dempster, #5m of Malloy, #12c of Fred Cade, and #7 of Jim Price brought out the red flag. Cade and Malloy got the worst of it, with their damaged mounts being towed pit-side. Cade made heavy contact with the wall but fortunately emerged from his machine unscathed.

Back under green for a 2 lap dash to the finish, Bergeron and Zimbardi distanced themselves from the rest of the field. After taking the white flag, Bergeron dove low under Zimbardi in turn 2 and won the drag race down the back straight, which proved to be the winning move. Ryan Hunsinger’s #77x may have been the fastest car on the track in the feature, but after moving his way into 3rd in the latter stages of the race all the way from an 11th starting position, “the Gunslinger” slipped high in turns 3&4, and then suffered front wing damage shortly thereafter. Keith Dempster slipped past Hunsinger for 3rd at the end, while Kevin Job brought his #21x home in 5th. Heat wins went to Riegling, Cade, Hunsinger, and Rob Pietz, while Glen Styres took the checkered flag in the B-Main. Styres actually finished 1st in Heat 3, but was scored last after failing to go to the tech area immediately after the race. After advancing from 8th to 1st in the B-Main, Styres then advanced from 17th to fight for a top 5 position in the A-Main before his crash in turn 4.

In ESSO Thunder-Stock action, a fine field of 18 cars were in the pit area for Round 2. Defending Ohsweken champ Brad Bacher found himself in a hole once again this week after running afoul of the officials in heat race #1, forcing the #3 to start in the 8th row in the feature. Vince Fargnoli (#55f) and last week’s feature winner Cody MacPherson (#777) brought the field down to the green flag for 15 laps of Thunder-Stock action, with MacPherson picking up right where he left off last week – in the lead. Behind him, plenty of side-by-side action could be found, as Brad Bacher, Ryan Dinning, and Glen Leinen all advanced to challenge for top 5 finishes from deep in the field. Leinen tried many different lines around the track to get around Fargnoli and into a position to challenge MacPherson for the win, but was not able to overtake Fargnoli’s #55f. Leinen settled for 3rd while Kevin Knapp ran a steady race to bring his #4k home in 4th, in front of a hard-charging Bacher who crossed the stripe 5th. Heat race wins for the ESSO Thunder-Stocks went to Fargnoli and MacPherson.

24 ESSO Mini-Stocks filled the pits for their second event of the season at Ohsweken, and it was evident in heat race action that Mitchell Brown (#10) was going to be a factor on this night. Brown, the 15 year old son of NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driver Doug Brown, took home the win in heat race #3, earning him a 3rd place starting position in the feature. The #88 of Kelly Hallett advanced from the tail of heat race #3 to finish in 2nd behind Brown. Mike Giberson (#11) and Abel Castelein (#28) brought the field down for the green flag in the 15 lap feature, with Castelein assuming the early lead, but Brown and Hallett quickly made it a 3-way battle for the lead, which continued throughout the entire race. Behind them, Kevin Hilborn, Rick Emberson, and Steve Hess were slicing and dicing their way from deeper in the field into the top 10, but ran out of time to mount a challenge at the front. Brown eventually cleared Hallett and Castelein, who battled for 2nd, leaving Brown to finish the last few laps without a serious challenge. Castelein prevailed for 2nd, with Hallett 3rd, Hilborn’s #72 in 4th and #113 Mark Thorne rounding out the top 5. Heat race victories went to Giberson, Castelein, and Brown.

In Fun Stock action, a new driver joined the fray and took home the victory in the 25 lap feature, run on the smaller track in Ohsweken’s infield this week. Lee Hils brought his #181 to victory lane and entered his name in the record book as the 2nd Fun Stock feature winner at Ohsweken Speedway. Hils remarked afterwards that his car took just a day and a half to build, at a cost of $150. This affordable and fun entry level class is expected to grow as the season continues, as it is a great way to get involved and see what dirt track racing is all about!

Iroquois Poker presented Friday night’s action this week and is also running a unique promotion for Ohsweken fans this season. On June 23, a Progressive Poker Tournament will be held, with the winner taking home $250, while another $250 in sponsorship will be presented to an Ohsweken race team of the winner’s choosing. Make sure to visit HYPERLINK “http://www.IroquoisPoker.net” www.IroquoisPoker.net to enter and support your favourite Ohsweken team!

Friday Night Thunder resumes next Friday, May 30 when Trailers by Jim Bray presents another action packed 4-division event featuring the Corr/Pak Winged Sprints, ESSO Thunderstocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Fun Stocks, while the Modified Lite Star Championship Tour North series will also make the first of 2 scheduled trips to Ohsweken next Friday. Adult General Admission will once again be $10, with kids 12 and under FREE! Please visit HYPERLINK “http://www.OhswekenSpeedway.com” www.OhswekenSpeedway.com for more information.

Sault, Castelein, McPherson, and Styres Take Opening Night Victories at Ohsweken

by Tommy Goudge (May 16, 2008) – Clear skies greeted fans and racers for Opening Night presented by Corr/Pak Merchandising at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. When all the races were in the books, 3 familiar faces and 1 new one had graced Engine Pro Racing/Melling Performance Pumps/Ferrara Valves Victory Lane. Glenn Styres won the Corr/Pak Sprint Car feature, Cody MacPherson took the checkered flag in the ESSO Thunderstocks, Abel Castelein was victorious in ESSO Mini-Stocks, and newcomer Karl Sault took home feature win honours in the inaugural Fun Stock feature.

32 drivers signed in to compete in the first ever event for Ohsweken’s new Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division on Friday night. With a very strong field of local teams, and invaders from New York and Michigan also on hand, the competition was intense throughout the evening. Many very fast drivers found themselves in the B-Main, and only the top 5 transferred to the big 20 lap feature. Salamanca, New York’s Jared Zimbardi (Sprint Car #35) and Ohsweken Speedway co-owner Glenn Styres (Sprint Car #0) paced the 20 car field to the green flag, with “the Ohsweken Flyer” getting ahead of “The Juice” and setting sail out front. Styres last won a Sprint Car feature at the Brighton Speedway on May 6, 2006 and it was obvious he did not want the winless streak to go any longer. The other front-runners were never too far behind during the non-stop affair, and when Styres encountered lapped traffic, Zimbardi and a hard charging Fred Cade (Sprint Car #12c) began to close in slightly on Styres while they waged a spirited battle for the second position, but they could not catch the orange and white #0 car. Cade eventually prevailed for 2nd, leaving Zimbardi to settle for 3rd in front of Rob Pietz (Sprint Car #69ez) and Styres’ team-mate Keith Dempster (Sprint Car #5).

Dave Dykstra (Sprint Car #5d) took the B-Main while Styres, Zimbardi, John Reigling (Sprint Car #1a), and Pietz collected wins in the 4 heat races. Kyle Patrick (Sprint Car #33k) flipped hard in turn 1 at the start of the 4th heat race and was checked over by the track medical staff due to pain in his knee and ankle. Kyle will recover from his bumps and bruises, but the same cannot be said of his once-beautiful sprinter, which suffered a badly damaged frame in the incident.

The ESSO Thunder-Stock feature was also closely contested, with 2007 Merrittville Speedway Thunder-Stock 2nd place points finisher Cody MacPherson (Thunder Stock #777) starting on the front row, and Vince Fargnoli (Thunder Stock #55f) to his outside. MacPherson took the lead at the start and led all 15 laps, but defending track champion Brad Bacher (Thunder Stock #3) had the high groove working well while moving up from his starting spot inside row 3 and was in hot pursuit of MacPherson’s #777 after a caution bunched the field. Bacher could not track down MacPherson before the checkered flag flew however, while Shane Pierce (Thunder-Stock #88), Fargnoli, and Glen Leinen (Thunder Stock #9) rounded out the top 5. Heat Race victories went to MacPherson and Fargnoli.

A fine field of 28 ESSO Mini-Stocks were in the pits for opening night to contest the first feature event of 2008 on the Ohsweken clay. Rick Robinson (Mini-Stock #05) and Chris Hess (Mini-Stock #7x) brought the field to the green flag, with Robinson getting the early lead, but defending Ohsweken and Merrittville champion Abel Castelein (Mini-Stock #28) quickly advanced from his starting spot outside row 3 to contend for the lead. Castelein and Robinson raced side-by-side for a number of laps before Castelein finally got ahead of the #05, which is shared throughout each season by drivers Robinson and David Goodacre, with a few laps to go. It was a special moment in victory lane as Matt Castelein was there to congratulate Abe. Heat wins went to Mitchell Brown (Mini-Stock #10) Mike Evers (Mini-Stock #265), and Jim Swing (Mini-Stock #40). Kelly Hallett arrived late to the track and did not contest a heat race, forcing the #88 to the tail of the feature, but at the completion of the 15 lap feature the great-looking black and green machine was found all the way up in the 7th position. Rookie Wyatt Van Wart ran steadily in his first race at Ohsweken, starting 21st and finishing 16th in his #04 Volkswagen.

3 Fun Stocks showed up for opening night and ran a 15 lap feature with Karl Sault (Fun Stock #81), Chris Hils(Fun Stock #818), and Steven Hils (Fun Stock #5) finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The inexpensive entry level class is expected to grow as the season moves along.
