STYRES SNARES ANOTHER OHSWEKEN WIN

By Tommy Goudge (June 29, 2012) – Glenn Styres took his second Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car win of 2012 on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway. Metal Works presented “Kids Night” at Ohsweken, which also found Derek Wagner winning the Modified Lite Stars International Championship Tour feature, Brad Herron narrowly taking another Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks win, Karl Sault taking HRW Automotive Mini Stocks honours, and Jesse McDonald in the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle for the Pierced Parts Bombers.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Chris Steele and Dave Dykstra started on the front row for the Sprint Car A-Feature, and Dykstra took the early lead, with Glenn Styres taking over the runner-up spot. Styres gave chase until lap 6, when he got around Dykstra and took the lead. Several yellow flags slowed the race, including one for hard-charging Jamie Collard, who was in the top 5 when a mud clod caused an issue with his throttle linkage.

An entertaining race developed for the other top 5 positions, while Styres maintained his lead. Steele held the runner-up spot until just 5 laps were left, when both Tom and Jim Huppunen got by. Styres took the win, followed by Jim Huppunen, Tom Huppunen, Chris Steele, and Travis Cunningham.

Heat races for the 30 car field were claimed by Jim Huppunen, Dain Naida, Glenn Styres, and Michael Parent, while Shane Ross won the B-Main.

MODIFIED LITE STARS INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR
Jason Corless and Dillan Sliter began the Mod-Lite feature on the front row, but Derek Wagner quickly asserted himself up front. Wagner built a substantial lead until a caution flag flew just past the halfway mark for a Korey Howe spin.

The stoppage allowed Paul Klager and Shawn Sliter to take a shot at the win, but Wagner did not make any mistakes, and took the win. Klager settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Shawn Sliter, Josh Sliter, and Dillan Sliter.

Heat race wins for the 16 car field went to Josh Sliter and Shawn Sliter.

LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
Brett Rodwell and Robbie General started the Thunder Stock feature on the front row, and behind them the field quickly fanned out looking for racing room. Brad Herron and Cory Turner eventually seperated themselves from the pack, and raced side-by-side for much of the second half of the race, with Herron edging ahead to take his second win in a row.

The race was slowed by a red flag when contact between several cars resulted in Dave Bailey’s #73 going upside down on the backstretch. Bailey emerged uninjured from his heavily-damaged machine.

Cory Turner settled for second, with Mike Thorne barely ahead of Jack Myers for the third spot, and Lee Winger in 5th.

Heat races for the 31 car field were claimed by Brett Rodwell, Chris Dickie, Brad Herron, and Cory Turner, while Rob Disher won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Brian Crosgrove and Laura Hughes made up an all-rookie front row for the Mini Stock feature, but they were eventually overtaken by hard-charging Jeremy Hughes, and others. Jeremy’s #10j looked to be the car to beat, until his engine went south near the end of the race.

Karl Sault drove through the field from the 8th row to get his first feature win of 2012, followed by Mark Czuba, Jason Lungaro, Robin Elliott, and Laura Hughes. The points standings received a shakeup when leader Mike Evers was involved in a crash early in the race, and did not finish.

Heat races for the 33 car field were claimed by Brian Crosgrove, John Cote, Mark Czuba, and Karl Sault, while Doug Erskine won the B-Main.

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
Mark Bazuin and Brady Longboat were front row starters for the Bomber feature, and Longboat took the lead in search of his first win. Jesse McDonald made his way to the runner-up spot, and traded the lead with Longboat several times before getting by for good.

McDonald claimed his first win of the season, followed by Longboat, Jeremy May, Davey Boughton, and Max Chechalk.

Heat race wins for the 12 car field went to Longboat and McDonald.

BARGER DOMINATES ROUND TWO OF NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS

By Tommy Goudge (June 23, 2012) Merlin, Ontario – Justin Barger made it a clean sweep for New York drivers this weekend by claiming the second round of the Jones Brown Motorsport Insurance Northern Summer Nationals Sprint Car series at South Buxton Raceway on Saturday night. Barger started from the pole position and was never seriously challenged on his way to the $2,000 win.

Barger and Alain Bergeron made up the front row for the 25 lap feature by virtue of the “outlaw-style” redraw, and Barger took off when the green flag dropped. Bergeron started to feel heat from Travis Cunningham, while Dustin Daggett was moving up from the 4th row.

Barger had a close call in traffic when Chris Durand lost a rear end and slowed in front of the leader, but survived unscathed. A restart with 5 laps to go gave the rest of the field one more shot at Barger, but he was not to be denied on this night, and took the win.

“We had a really good car in the feature,” Barger said afterwards. “(We) just made a few changes, and the starting position helped out a lot. Lapped traffic played into my hand. One close call during the race, but the rest of it was pretty good. We’re up here to try to win this deal, so we’ll see what we’ve got in the next 2 races.”

Daggett got around Cunningham on the last restart, and did everything he could to catch Barger before settling for the runner-up spot.

“I think if I could have started right behind (Barger) I would have had something, because on the first lap on the restart, the car was good right in the middle,” said Daggett after the race. “After that it was done. I had one chance at it, and that’s all it was. We’ll take it. The way our season’s been going, a second place finish is like a win to us right now.”

Cunningham took 3rd place honours to cap off a competitive weekend, which saw him in contention for the win at Ohsweken on Friday night.

“It was me and my 75 year old car owner here tonight,” Cunningham told the crowd. “We’re just a low buck team, and this really feels good for us.

Heat races for the 27 car field were claimed by Jamie Collard, Dustin Daggett, and Glenn Styres, while Dick Mahoney won the B-Main.

ZIMBARDI WINS ROUND ONE OF NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS

By Tommy Goudge (June 22, 2012) Ohsweken, Ontario – Jared Zimbardi opened the 2012 Jones Brown Motorsport Insurance Northern Summer Nationals Sprint Car series at Ohsweken Speedway with his fourth career feature win at the Styres family-owned facility. Brad Herron topped another large field of Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks for his second win of the year, while Mike Evers also got his second win of the season in HRW Automotive Mini Stock competition, and Kathi Dickie won her first ever Pierced Parts Bombers feature.

NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS SPRINT CARS
Glenn Styres and Chris Steele began the Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Styres built a lead before encountering slower traffic. Styres made contact with Kyle Moffit in turn 1 as he tried to put a lap on the New York driver, spun, and kept going, but the yellow flag flew, with Styres deemed the reason for the caution. He restarted 23rd, while Steele took over out front, having survived a tangle with Scott Kreutter a few laps earlier, which sent Kreutter to the infield.

Steele’s lead did not last, and Travis Cunningham got by before another lap was completed, but Steele took over again to lead laps 12 and 13. Dustin Daggett fell back from his row 3 starting position early in the race, but came back to challenge for the lead as the race reached the halfway mark. Daggett became the race’s fourth difference leader on 14, but he only stayed out front for 2 laps before making contact with Jesse Costa in turn 3.

Daggett restarted the race at the tail of the field, while Jared Zimbardi powered his way to the front after the restart, and led the final 10 laps to get the feature win. Chris Steele, Bryan Howland, Justin Barger, and Jamie Collard chased Zimbardi home in the top 5.

Dustin Daggett, Scott Kreutter, Tom Huppunen, Justin Barger, and Glenn Styres claimed heat race wins over the 46 car field, while Lee Ladouceur and Warren Mahoney won the two B-Mains.

Brett Rodwell and Kacey Huffman made up the front row for the Thunder Stock feature, but Brad Herron quickly made his way to the front and took off, looking for his second win of the season. Torrid action took place in the rest of the pack, as the runner-up spot changed hands several times before Jake Brown eventually emerged with it.

Herron cruised to the feature win, followed by Brown, Mike Thorne, Devin Habiuk, and Wyatt Van Wart. Several drivers drove forward from deep in the field, including Jack Myers, who made it into the field as the first alternate, and advanced to 8th after starting at the back.

Brett Rodwell, Murray Nicholls, Brad Herron, and Mike Thorne won the heat races for the 32 car field, while Brian Pescetti won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Sarah Miskiewicz and Laura Hughes made an all-female front row for the Mini Stocks, and Hughes had a good run going until sliding off the edge of the track in turn 2. Mike Evers quickly advanced from the 9th row to get the lead, and held it the rest of the way for his second win of the season, then announced in the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle that he would be retiring at the end of the season.

Doug Erskine took the runner-up position, followed by Jason Lungaro, Sarah Miskiewicz, and row 11 starter Karl Sault.

Heat races for the 30 car field were claimed by Dan Stewart, Rodney Rutherford, Jason Lungaro, and Jeremy Hughes, while Craig Erskine won the B-Main.

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
Kathi Dickie started on the pole of the Bomber feature, and held off numerous challenges to get her first feature win. Max Chechalk eventually prevailed to get the runner-up spot, while Jesse McDonald settled for third, followed by Brady Longboat and Davey Boughton.

Longboat and McDonald claimed the heat races for the 12 car field.

BUSY NIGHT FINISHES WITH 7 DIFFERENT WINNERS AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY

By Tommy Goudge (June 15, 2012) – “Brant County Night” presented by Lighthouse Tattoos at Ohsweken Speedway was action-packed on Friday night, as extra races were added to the program due to rain the previous week. An efficient program allowed 120 total competitors to complete 8 features, 4 B-Mains, and 14 heat races in less than 4 hours.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
The Sprint Cars saw both their B-Main and A-Feature rained out on June 8, and both were made up at the beginning of the evening. Brad Malloy and Keith Dempster started on the front row of the postponed A-Feature, and Dempster took command for the first half of the event. Chris Steele was close behind, and made his way around Dempster on lap 12 on the way to his first career Sprint Car feature win. He was chased to the finish line by 18th starter Glenn Styres, along with Dempster, Jamie Collard, and Jared Zimbardi.

The regularly-scheduled A-Feature for the Sprint Cars began with Jim Huppunen and Tyler Rand on the front row, and Huppunen led wire-to-wire in what turned out to be a caution-free feature. The 2011 track champion was not able to pass post-race technical inspection however, and the win was awarded to runner-up Tom Huppunen. Dain Naida, Tyler Rand, Glenn Styres, and Travis Cunningham rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 34 car field were claimed by Travis Cunningham, Jim Huppunen, Glenn Styres, and Tom Huppunen, while Scott Kreutter won the B-Main.

LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
Regularly-scheduled Twin 15 lap features for the Thunder Stocks were augmented with a postponed feature from June 8, creating a tripleheader for the full-size stock car contingent. Wyatt Van Wart opened the evening with a win, and backed that up with another victory in the first Twin 15, before settling for 3rd in the last race of the evening, behind winner Devin Habiuk.

Heat races for the 39 car field went to Shaun Quinn, Ryan Turner, Devin Habiuk, and Rob Murray, while Jack Myers won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Mike Evers was looking to complete a sweep of the “Abel Castelein Twin 14’s” presented by Trailers by Jim Bray. He won the first feature on June 8 before rain postponed the rest of the evening.

Dan Erskine and Dale Gyokery began the second Twin 14 on the front row under a sunny sky on Friday night, but Jeremy Hughes made his way through the pack from his 7th row starting spot, and took the feature win. Karl Sault, Mark Czuba, Mike Evers, and Chase Hess rounded out the top 5.

The regularly-scheduled feature race began with rookies Brian Crosgrove and Sarah Rutherford on the front row, but the fastest cars started closer to the back of the field and put on a good show as they moved forward. Jeremy Hughes again took the checkered flag ahead of the rest of the field, but did not pass the post-race technical inspection. Mark Czuba drove through the field from 20th on the grid to take the runner-up spot, and inherited the feature win after Hughes’
disqualification. Dale Cooke, opening night winner Jason Lungaro, Mike Evers, and Dave Small rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 31 car field were claimed by Brian Crosgrove, Doug Erskine, Karl Sault, and Jeremy Hughes, while Mark Czuba won the B-Main.

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
The Bomber racers were the only ones not affected by rain on June 8.
Kathi Dickie and Brady Longboat began the feature race on the front row, but opening night feature winner Max Chechalk made his way to the front, and took his second victory of the season. Jesse McDonald took the runner-up spot, followed by Kathi Dickie, Cole Rodwell, and Dusty DeBoer. The race was red-flagged briefly as Jeremy May got upside down.
Fortunately, Jeremy climbed from his car unhurt.

Heat races for the 16 car field were claimed by May and Longboat.

NEXT WEEK AT OHSWEKEN
Jones Brown Insurance presents round 1 of the “Northern Summer Nationals” series next Friday, June 22. The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprints will be joined by the Southern Ontario Sprints club, Patriot Sprint Tour, and other teams and drivers from across the northeast for the first half of a doubleheader weekend, which will conclude Saturday night at South Buxton Raceway. Any 360 Sprint Car which meets the Northern Summer Nationals rulebook will be allowed to compete, and a large field is expected for both nights. The overall points champion of the 4 race Northern Summer Nationals miniseries will be guaranteed a spot in September’s Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. NHRA drag racing star Cruz Pedregon will be back to compete in Friday night’s Sprint Car events, and the Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Pierced Parts Bombers are also part of round 4 of Friday Night Thunder on June 22. Gates open at 6:00 with racing starting at 7:45!
