LINDBERG, STYRES, RICHARDSON, HUGHES & LONGBOAT CLAIM VICTORIES AT OHSWEKEN

by Tommy Goudge (May 24, 2013) – 121 cars jammed the pits on Grisdale Racing Products night at Ohsweken Speedway for the “Sportsman Shootout”. The evening ended with Gary Lindberg, Glenn Styres, Bryce Richardson, Laura Hughes,, and Brady Longboat visiting Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane

DIRTcar SPORTSMAN MODIFIEDS
The DIRTcar Sportsman returned to Ohsweken for the first time in almost 5 years, and brought a competitive field of 19 cars. Brad Rouse led the early stages of the race, however a mid-race restart was beneficial for Gary Lindberg, as the Humberstone Speedway points leader grabbed the lead and cruised to the win. Rouse finished second, followed by A.J. Lewis, Darrell Farraway, and Jim Johnstone.

The race was red flagged on lap 15 for a hard crash in turn four by Adam Leslie. Thankfully Leslie walked away uninjured, but his #15 machine was left heavily damaged.

Heat races for the 19 car field were claimed by Gary Lindberg and Cody McPherson.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Glenn Styres visited Klotz Synthetic Lubricants of Canada Victory Lane after the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature for a second straight week. The win didn’t come easily though, as Dave Dykstra was in control until problems forced his car to the infield. Styres traded slide jobs with Tom Huppunen, and then made the winning move around Jim Huppunen following a late restart.

Dain Naida’s crew had a very busy night end on a sour note. The #07x crew changed a rear end, U-joint, and engine in time to start the feature, but then saw their car get upside down in the third turn on the first lap of the feature due to a stuck throttle. Fortunately Naida was unhurt in the incident.

Heat races for the 22 car field were claimed by Derek Jonathan, Jamie Collard, and Glenn Styres, while Collard also won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for accruing the most heat race passing points. Glenn Styres expanded his points lead with his 18th career Sprint Car feature win at Ohsweken.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Karl Sault dominated the Thunder Stock feature, but Bryce Richardson ended up claiming the victory after Sault’s machine failed post-race inspection. Richardson and Lee Winger raced hard for the second position behind Sault, with Richardson eventually prevailing with what turned out to be the feature-winning move. Winger was credited with the second position, followed by new points leader Jim Lampman, Mike Thorne, and Pete Reid in the Habiuk #5h.

Heat races for the 37 car field were claimed by Chris Dickie, Karl Sault, Brad Herron, and Lee Winger, while Mike Miller won the B-Main. Winger’s heat race-winning time of 2:36.078 set a new 8 lap track record for Thunder Stocks at Ohsweken.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
A first time winner went to victory lane after the HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature for a second consecutive week, as Laura Hughes drove to the win over opening night winner Davey Boughton. Alex Schuts finished third for the second straight week, followed by Jason Lungaro, and Robin Elliott. Mark Da Silva was uninjured after a spectacular flip in turn 3 early in the race. Boughton continues to lead the points standings.

Heat races for the 31 car field were claimed by Jason Lungaro, Davey Boughton, and Laura Hughes, while Josh Shantz won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Brady Longboat survived traffic to win the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bomber feature over Max Chechalk, Jesse McDonald, Tim DeBoer, and Wayde Thorne. Longboat took over the points lead in the process.

Heat races for the 12 car field were claimed by Brady Longboat and Dusty DeBoer.

NEXT WEEK AT OHSWEKEN

DIRTCAR SPORTSMAN RETURN TO OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY THIS FRIDAY

Ohsweken, Ontario – May 23, 2013 – Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th season began last Friday with 99 cars in the pit area, and great racing in all divisions. This Friday’s event will be even better, as Grisdale Racing presents the “Sportsman Shootout” featuring the DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds returning to Ohsweken for the first time since 2008. The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers will also join the action-packed night this Friday, May 24.

DIRTcar SPORTSMAN MODIFIEDS
DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds return to Ohsweken this Friday for the first time in 5 years. Formerly a weekly division at Ohsweken, the class has produced several current Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division regulars, including 2010 champion Dave Dykstra.

Many Sportsman division regulars at Merrittville Speedway and Humberstone Speedway are expected to compete at the DIRTcar-sanctioned event at Ohsweken this Friday, including Cody McPherson, a former Ohsweken Speedway Thunder Stock division champ who won the 2012 DIRTcar Sportsman Series title. Humberstone points leader Gary Lindberg has won two features at the Port Colborne track already this season, and will be another driver to watch at Ohsweken on Friday.

Some other former Ohsweken Speedway champions will be in the Sportsman field on Friday, including 2007 Ohsweken Speedway Sportsman champion Nick Cupolo, 2003 Ohsweken Speedway Mini Stock champion Robbie Rounce, and 2006 Ohsweken Speedway Thunder Stock champion A.J. Lewis, who has become a Sportsman regular at Canandaigua Speedway in New York state.

Several drivers who have competed at Ohsweken in Mod-Lites in the past are now Sportsman division regulars expected to compete on Friday, including Adam Leslie, Joey Mastroianni, and Shawn Sliter. Ohsweken’s victory lane has seen Sliter several times after dominating Mod-Lite performances.

The event will also have some American flavour, with Western New York drivers Mark Chiddy and Bob Winters planning to attend.

STYRES, TURNER, BOUGHTON & McDONALD GRAB OPENING NIGHT WINS AT OHSWEKEN

by Tommy Goudge (May 17, 2013) – Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th season of competition began on Friday night with Glenn Styres (Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars), Cory Turner (Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks), Davey Boughton (HRW Automotive Mini Stocks), and Jesse McDonald (Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers) visiting Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Styres started the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature on the inside of the second row, and quickly took the lead from Derek Jonathan. The race was halted once for a red flag, after Todd Hoddick took a wild tumble in turn one. Styres overcame nose wing damage to take the win, his 17th career feature victory at Ohsweken. Chris Steele, Mitch Brown, Mikey Kruchka, and Dave Dykstra rounded out the top five.

Glenn Styres, Travis Cunningham, and Mitch Brown claimed heat race wins, while Dain Naida won the B-Main, and Mikey Kruchka received the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for accruing the most heat race passing points.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
The first Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stock feature of the season was hotly contested, but in the end Cory Turner emerged from the pack to win over Jim Lampman, Devin Habiuk, Mike Miller, and Lee Winger.

Brad Bacher, Steve Hess, Ryan Turner, and Chris Dickie won the heat races, while Karl Sault won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
There was a familiar car in victory lane with a rookie driver after the HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature. 2012 Bomber champion Davey Boughton piloted the former Jeremy Hughes ride to the win over Robin Elliott, Alex Schuts, Dave Goodacre, and Laura Hughes.

Robin Elliott, Jason Lungaro, and Laura Hughes won heat races, while Dale Gyokery took the victory in the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
A four car race for the win made the Gales Auto Aftermarket Bomber feature exciting right to the end. Jesse McDonald started on the pole and led the entire event, but he had to make his way through traffic while fending off challenges from Brady Longboat, Dusty Deboer, and Max Chechalk, who finished in that order, with Tim DeBoer rounding out the top 5.

Brady Longboat and Dusty DeBoer won the first Bomber heat races of the season.

2013 SEASON STARTS THIS WEEK AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY

Ohsweken, Ontario – May 16, 2013 – Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th annual Opening Night will take the green flag on Friday, May 17 at 7:30pm, and large fields are expected in all of the regular Friday night divisions. The opening event of Ohsweken’s season will include the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers, with extra-distance features on tap for each.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Fenwick driver Chris Steele enters the Sprint Car season opener with a target on his back, as he claimed the 2012 track championship. Past champions Keith Dempster, Tom Huppunen, Dave Dykstra, and Jim Huppunen are just a few of the many drivers capable of challenging for this year’s title, along with 2012 feature winners Glenn Styres, Travis Cunningham, and Dain Naida, past winners Mikey Kruchka, Mitch Brown, Jamie Collard, and Kyle Patrick, plus many more.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Caledonia’s Mike Thorne took his second consecutive Thunder Stock title in 2012, but he will definitely have competition for the 2013 crown. Record fields were seen in the Thunder Stock division last year, and more of the same is expected in 2013, with almost 40 drivers already registered. Challengers for the title could include 2012 feature winners Brad Herron, Jack Myers, Wyatt Van Wart, and Cory Turner, to name just a few.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Dundas driver Karl Sault has won the last two Mini Stock titles, but he has moved to Thunder Stocks this season, leaving the door open for a new champion. Several other 2012 contenders have also moved to other divisions, or retired, making the Mini Stocks a guessing game this year. Jason Lungaro finished 3rd in the standings last season and won 2 features, making him one of the drivers to watch, but a host of rookies and new cars will make things interesting, along with veterans like Steve Miller, David Goodacre, and 2004 champion Doug Erskine.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
The Bombers have become an affordable way for drivers to get involved in racing, and the division has graduated many of them to other Ohsweken classes. 2012 champion Davey Boughton has moved to the Mini Stock division for 2013, leaving the door open for a new Bomber champ. Kathi Dickie won two Bomber features last season, and has also moved to Mini Stocks, along with Jeremy May, who finished 6th in the Bomber standings last year. Plenty of talent will be in the Bomber field though, as 2012 winners Max Chechalk, Dusty DeBoer, Brady Longboat, and Mark Bazuin are a few of the drivers expected to race each week.

NEW START TIME
Start times for weekly Friday night racing events at Ohsweken Speedway have changed for 2013. The pit gates will normally open at 5:30pm, and spectator gates will continue to open at 6:00pm, while the first race will now take the green flag at 7:30pm.
