SCHATZ DOMINATES WORLD OF OUTLAWS STP SPRINT CARS AT OHSWEKEN

by Tommy Goudge (July 30, 2013) – 70 drivers signed in to race on World of Outlaws Sprint Car series “Six Nations Showdown” night presented by Arrow Express at Ohsweken Speedway on Tuesday. Donny Schatz and Karl Sault visited Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane.

WORLD OF OUTLAWS SPRINT CAR SERIES
A huge crowd watched Jason Sides and Donny Schatz start on the front row of the 30 lap World of Outlaws feature event, and . The first lap wasn’t complete when Cody Darrah’s car suffered front end damage to bring out the only yellow flag of the race.

Sides took the lead when the race restarted, and set off in search of his 4th Ohsweken win in 7 tries, but Schatz stayed close to Sides, and made the winning pass with 11 laps complete. Schatz built a sizeable lead, lost part of it in traffic, and then built it to almost 7 seconds by the time the checkered flag fell. The win was Donny Schatz’s 2nd at Ohsweken Speedway, while Chad Kemenah raced to the runner-up spot, followed by Daryn Pittman, Jason Sides, and Tony Stewart.

Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky, and Chad Kemenah won the heat races, while Tom Huppunen was the winner of the B-Main, Jason Sides won the Dash race, and Paul McMahan was fastest in time trials with a lap of 13.002 seconds.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Shaun Quinn and Brett Rodwell were on the front row for the 25 lap Thunder Stock feature, and Quinn led early before giving way to Rodwell, who led 1 lap before Rob Murray got to the front from his row 10 starting position. Murray had problems and fell back while Aaron Turkey took over, but Karl Sault tracked Turkey down and led the second half of the event to get the feature win. Ryan Turner, Wyatt Van Wart, Pete Reid, and Jim Lampman chased Sault to the finish line.

Heat races for the 39 car field were claimed by Shaun Quinn, Trevor DeBoer, Karl Sault, and Mike Thorne, while Lee Winger won the B-Main.

STEWART SIZZLES IN BURGER BARN NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS

by Tommy Goudge (July 29, 2013) – 96 drivers signed in to race on “Northern Summer Nationals” night presented by Burger Barn at Ohsweken Speedway on Monday. Shane Stewart, Chad Brachmann, Davey Boughton, and Jesse McDonald visited Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Regular Friday night racers Tom Huppunen and Glenn Styres made up the front row for the special 25 lap Sprint Car feature, with a guaranteed starting spot in September’s Canadian Sprint Car Nationals on the line for the winner. Invaders Shane Stewart and Tony Stewart started right behind them in row 2, and quickly took over in the 1st and 2nd positions.

All eyes were on the front of the field, as Tony chased Shane through traffic for much of the race. Kyle Moffit brought out a yellow flag on lap 17 when he spun while fighting for a top 10 spot. Tony used the restart as his opportunity to make a move for the lead, and he and Shane traded slide jobs before Tony caught the cushion in turn 3 and flipped wildly to bring out a red flag on lap 18. The 3 time NASCAR champion climbed from his damaged machine uninjured, but done for the night.

Glenn Styres had fallen back to 4th, but moved back around Jessica Zemken for 3rd just before Tony’s crash, and was in position to race Shane for the lead when the race restarted. Shane set a torrid pace while Styres tried to keep up, but Glenn got over the cushion in turn 2 and flipped on lap 23. He was also uninjured, but not able to finish the race. Shane Stewart cruised to the win, with Zemken 2nd, Dain Naida 3rd, Jamie Collard 4th, and Mitch Brown 5th.

Heat races for the 29 car field went to Shane Stewart, Tom Huppunen, and Travis Cunningham, while Shane Ross won the B-Main, and Tony Stewart won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” Award for accruing the most heat race passing points.

DIRTcar 358 MODIFIEDS
Brandon Easey and Billy Bleich, Sr. made up the front row for the first 358 Modified feature at Ohsweken since 2008. Easey led the first 6 laps before Chad Brachmann took over, and began to open up a lead. Great racing ensued throughout the rest of the field, with several 3 wide moments.

Brachmann got faster during the second half of the feature, and ran the fastest lap of the race on lap 25. He was slowed only by a pair of yellow flags, and won the 30 lap feature by more than 5 seconds. Mat Williamson got the runner-up spot, followed by Mark D’Ilario, Chris Steele, and Erick Rudolph.

Heat races for the 20 car field were claimed by Brandon Easey and Billy Bleich, Sr.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Mark Verhuel and Mike Giberson were the front row starters for the Mini Stock feature, but several drivers quickly made their way to the front from outside the top 10, with Davey Boughton eventually taking the lead. Boughton pulled away to the feature win, and took over the points lead again as a result. Laura Hughes, Tyler Lafantaisie, Robin Elliott, and Rodney Rutherford chased Boughton to the finish line.

Mark Verhuel, Jonathan Ayrton, and Mark Czuba won the heat races for the 31 car field, while Jason Lungaro won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Skip Brandow and Clinton Nicholls had the front row starting positions for the Bomber feature, but Jesse McDonald made his way to the front and negotiated traffic to get the feature win. Mark Bazuin, Max Chechalk, Tim DeBoer, and Wayde Thorne rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 16 car field were claimed by Jesse McDonald and Brady Longboat.

“SMOKE” RETURNS FOR NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS & SIX NATIONS SHOWDOWN

By Tommy Goudge (July 28, 2013) – Two huge events are set to go at Ohsweken Speedway this week. NASCAR champion Tony Stewart will take on the best drivers from Ohsweken’s Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, and DIRTcar 358 Modifieds return to Ohsweken in the Northern Summer Nationals presented by Burger Barn on Monday, July 29, while the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series contests the “Six Nations Showdown” on Tuesday, July 30.

Ohsweken’s HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers will join the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars and DIRTcar 358 Modifieds on Monday, while the Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks will support the World of Outlaws on Tuesday.

“SMOKE” RETURNS
Tony Stewart’s return to Ohsweken has been one of the most highly-anticipated events of the Ontario racing season. He made his Ohsweken debut in 2011, and has since claimed wins in 3 of the 4 events he has run, including both World of Outlaws Sprint Car series races.

Stewart’s illustrious racing career began on Indiana dirt tracks, and he has never forgotten his roots, despite unprecedented success in the highest echelons of racing. “Smoke” is the only driver with NASCAR, IndyCar, and USAC championships on his resume, and he was the first to win USAC’s “Triple Crown” – Silver Crown, Sprint Car, and Midget titles in the same season.

The Columbus, IN driver still competes regularly in dirt track events, despite his busy schedule not only as a NASCAR star, but team owner as well. He is currently 22nd in the World of Outlaws championship standings, despite only running a partial schedule.

Stewart is also involved in dirt track racing in an ownership capacity, with involvement in several facilities including the famous Eldora Speedway, and owns several dirt track racing teams too, including those of Steve Kinser, and Donny Schatz.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Tony Stewart will take on Ohsweken’s tough weekly Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car teams in an event that pays full points towards their season championship. 2011 division champion Jim Huppunen is the current Corr/Pak points leader, and claimed a runner-up finish on Friday night. Mitch Brown took the feature win on Friday night, and sits second in the standings, followed by Jamie Collard, Todd Hoddick, and Glenn Styres.

DIRTcar 358 MODIFIEDS
The 358 Modifieds will return to Ohsweken for the first time in 5 years, and promise to bring a competitive field on Monday night. “Mr. Small Block” Pete Bicknell claimed the feature win in the most recent 358 Modified event at Ohsweken, held on August 8, 2008. Bicknell currently leads the Merrittville Speedway standings, and will be back on Monday night, along with plenty of top drivers from the Niagara area and beyond, including Humberstone Speedway points leader Erick Rudolph, Mat Williamson, Chad Brachman, Fred Carlton, Billy Bleich, Sr., Brandon Easey, Chad Chevalier, Chris Steele, Todd Gordon, Ryan Susice, Mike Bowman, Tommy Flannigan, Shayne Pierce, and more.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Alex Schuts saw his lead cut to just 1 point in the Mini Stock standings on Friday night. Davey Boughton is the second place driver, followed by Jason Lungaro, Laura Hughes, and Robin Elliott.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Dusty DeBoer holds a slim 3 point lead in the Bomber standings over his brother Tim, who claimed his first feature win on Friday. Jesse McDonald, Max Chechalk, and Brady Longboat round out the top 5.

WORLD OF OUTLAWS SPRINT CAR SERIES
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car series regulars have been busy this season, with 50 feature events already in the record books to date. Their visit to Ohsweken on Tuesday ends a three race eastern Canadian swing which began at Drummondville, Quebec on Saturday, and was scheduled to continue at Cornwall, Ontario on Sunday until weather intervened.

Oklahoma driver Daryn Pittman leads the World of Outlaws standings heading into Tuesday’s event. Pittman has claimed 8 wins this season, compared to 12 for Donny Schatz, but consistency has been the key as Pittman has a series-leading 33 top 5 finishes so far. Schatz is second in the standings, followed by Paul McMahan, Craig Dollansky, Sammy Swindell, Joey Saldana, Autodrome Drummond winner Cody Darrah, David Gravel, Steve Kinser, Kerry Madsen, Chad Kemenah, Kraig Kinser, and Jason Sides.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car series has competed at Ohsweken on seven occasions since the inaugural event in 2007. Jason Sides won that first event on July 25, 2007, and also recorded wins at Ohsweken on July 29, 2009, and July 30, 2010. Jason Meyers won at Ohsweken on July 28, 2009, while Donny Schatz won on August 1, 2010, and Tony Stewart took the checkered flag on July 27, 2011, and July 31, 2012.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Ohsweken’s Thunder Stock division has seen incredible growth over the past few seasons, and could see a record field on Tuesday night. 39 cars were signed in for the most recent regular Friday night program, and well over 40 are expected this week. Jack Myers got the feature win on Friday, but Cory Turner leads the way in the championship standings. Jim Lampman is currently second, followed by defending champion Mike Thorne, Bryce Richardson, and Chris Dickie.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Mitch Brown and Glenn Styres started the Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Styres took an early lead. Styres’ attempt at a fourth feature win at Ohsweken this season was stopped when he made hard contact with Scott Sherk, who had spun in turn 1.

Brown held the lead for the remainder of the race, while Jim Huppunen, Jamie Turner, Todd Hoddick, and Havard Daniels chased him across the finish line.

Heat races for the 24 car field were claimed by Jim Huppunen, Glenn Styres, and Travis Cunningham, while Mitch Brown won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for accruing the most heat race passing points.

2013 Results, News

WILD WEATHER CUTS NIGHT SHORT

by Tommy Goudge (July 19, 2013) –  97 drivers signed in to race on Autograph Night presented by Jones Brown Insurance and Evers Financial at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, but severe weather caused 3 of the 4 scheduled feature races to be postponed. A brief rain shower at the end of the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bomber feature caused a brief delay. While work on the track surface was successful, it was ultimately decided that the safety of the fans and competitors was most important. Due to lightning and impending heavy rain, track management decided to cancel the remainder of the event. A storm did indeed hit the speedway minutes later, bringing heavy rain and lightning, and causing a power outage.

The autograph session planned for intermission has been rescheduled to next Friday night (July 26, while the incomplete features will be run at later dates: The Affordable Towing and Recovery Thunder Stocks will run their 20 lap feature on August 9, while the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars will run their rescheduled feature on August 23, and the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks will complete their 15 lap feature on August 30. Each division will run both their rescheduled race and their regularly scheduled feature on the same night.

According to the Ohsweken Speedway rain out policy 7 races were completed, and the event is considered official, therefore no rain checks will be issued.

The 50/50 number has been drawn. The winning ticket number is 227555 on a yellow ticket. The prize of $427.50 can be claimed at Styres Gas Bar.

POIRIER PICKS UP 6TH CAREER OHSWEKEN FEATURE WIN

by Tommy Goudge (July 12, 2013) –  124 drivers signed in to race on Canadian Diabetes Foundation night presented by Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel and Kool Kidz Ice & Water at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday. Steve Poirier, Chris Dickie, Alex Schuts, Dusty DeBoer, Rick St. Pierre, and Bill Harju picked up the feature wins.

EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS VS. CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Glenn Styres and Steve Poirier started the 25 lap Sprint Car feature on the front row. Styres got the early lead, but Poirier kept the pressure on with several challenges for the lead early in the race. The 3 time Canadian Sprint Car Nationals winner stayed close behind Styres after a lap 9 restart, and made his winning move in traffic on lap 12. Poirier stayed ahead of Styres for the remainder of the race, but Styres found a fast line above the cushion.

The race was slowed for a second time on lap 19, when Chris Steele’s nose wing fell off and landed in the middle of turn one. The double file restart employed in all Empire Super Sprints events didn’t derail Poirier’s drive to his 6th career Ohsweken Speedway feature win, despite a last lap slide job attempt by Styres. Poirier and Styres were followed by Mikey Kruchka, Bryan Howland, and Mitch Brown.

Heat races for the 33 car field were claimed by Lance Yonge, Jim Huppunen, and Tom Huppunen, while Steve Collins won the B-Main, and Jim Huppunen won the Dash For Cash presented by Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance, setting a new 4 lap track record in the process.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Murray Nicholls and Steve Hess made up the front row for the 20 lap Thunder Stock feature, but 4th starter Ryan Dinning took the lead before the first lap was completed, and dominated the remainder of the race. A great race ensued for the runner-up spot, which turned out to be the fight for the win, when Dinning’s car did not make it through post-race technical inspection.

Aaron Turkey held the 2nd spot until the halfway mark, when he got sideways exiting turn 2, and fell back. Chris Dickie took over the position, and held off several challengers to cross the finish line 2nd behind Dinning. Dickie was then awarded the win, followed by 24th starter Mike Miller, 22nd starter Dave Silverthorn, Jr., Kevin Dawson, and Bryce Richardson. Dickie also took over as the new points leader, as Cory Turner was unable to move through the field, and eventually finished 15th.

Heat races for the 36 car field were claimed by Ryan Dinning, Terry Martin, Lee Winger, and Cory Turner, while Jake Brown won the B-Main. Dickie’s time of 6:50.19 is a new 20 lap track record for Thunder Stocks.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jamie Goudge and Kathi Dickie made up the front row for the 15 lap Mini Stock feature, but it didn’t take long for the top drivers in the standings to come through the field. The championship chase took a turn when Davey Boughton was collected in an incident on the frontstretch, which started with contact between Jon Janssens and Steve Miller. Boughton’s car was too heavily damaged to continue, and he was credited with a 21st place finish.

Jason Lungaro and Alex Schuts raced side-by-side for the lead several times as the race neared completion, but Lungaro couldn’t complete the pass, and then had to hold off Chase Hess for the runner-up spot, while Schuts took his second win of the season. John Cote and Laura Hughes rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 27 car field were claimed by Kathi Dickie, Chase Hess, and John Cote while Mike Taylor won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Chad Foster and Valen Longboat made up the front row for the 12 lap Bomber feature, but Foster had problems early on, while Wayde Thorne got to the lead. Thorne led until Dusty DeBoer muscled his way to the front, and kept Thorne at bay long enough to claim his second win of the season. Thorne settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Jesse McDonald, Tim DeBoer, and Brady Longboat.

Heat races for the 17 car field were claimed by Brady Longboat, and Tim DeBoer, while Bob Burgess won the B-Main.

VINTAGE CARS
Rick St. Pierre got to the front and staved off a late challenge from Steve Arbuthnot to take the overall win in the Vintage Cars feature, along with the Modified division win. Bill Harju finished 6th, and was the highest finishing Sportsman division car. St. Pierre also won the heat race for the 11 car field.

CORR/PAK SPRINT CARS VS. EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS THIS FRIDAY

Ohsweken, Ontario – July 11, 2013 – Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th season of racing continues this Friday, July 12 when Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel and Kool Kidz Ice & Water present Canadian Diabetes Foundation night, featuring the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars vs. the Empire Super Sprints tour, plus Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers, and the only appearance of the season for the Vintage Cars.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS VS. EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS
This Friday features the second of three challenge events this season between traveling Sprint Car series and the regulars of the weekly Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, with a $1,600 prize on the line for the feature winner. The New York-based Empire Super Sprints tour drivers are the foes for Corr/Pak drivers defending home turf this time, but a familiar face will be among the invaders. New Yorker Jason Barney won the most recent challenge event with the Patriot Sprint Tour at Ohsweken in June. Barney charged from 17th to take the win that night, and intends to be back this Friday.

Quebec’s Michael Parent is the current Empire Super Sprints championship leader, and has 3 ESS feature wins this season, including 2 during the recent Central New York Speedweek. Fellow Quebec driver Steve Poirier has 5 career feature wins at Ohsweken, including 3 in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, and is currently 2nd in the ESS standings. New York drivers Chuck Hebing, Lance Yonge, Kevin Ward Jr., Dylan Swiernik, Jeff Cook, and Joe Trenca are among other ESS regulars expected at Ohsweken on Friday.

2011 Corr/Pak champion Jim Huppunen will lead Ohsweken’s weekly Sprint Car drivers in defending their home turf. Huppunen currently sits atop the Corr/Pak standings, followed by Jamie Collard, Glenn Styres, Mitch Brown, Shane Ross, Todd Hoddick, 2012 champion Chris Steele, Derek Jonathan, Jamie Turner, and 2008 champion Keith Dempster. Collard won last week’s feature at Ohsweken, and also has wins at South Buxton and Brighton, while Styres has claimed 3 Corr/Pak wins already this season, along with a win at Brighton.

Normally the sponsor of the “Top Gun” award on regular Friday nights, Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance will present the ESS Dash this week.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
The Thunder Stock standings tightened up last week, as Cory Turner saw his points lead shrink to just 8 markers over Lee Winger. Chris Dickie is 3rd and just 19 points behind Turner, while defending champ Mike Thorne is 7 points behind Dickie, and Jim Lampman is just 4 points behind Thorne. Wyatt Van Wart won last week’s feature, and moved into the top 10 in the standings as a result.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
A pair of rookies lead the way in the Mini Stock standings, as Davey Boughton won another feature last Friday, and extended his points lead over Alex Schuts as a result. Robin Elliott, Jason Lungaro, and Laura Hughes make up the rest of the current top 5.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Jesse McDonald took his second win of the season last Friday, and reclaimed the points lead as a result. McDonald leads by 6 markers over Dusty DeBoer, while Max Chechalk, Tim DeBoer, and Brady Longboat round out the top 5.
