RYAN TURNER WINS “BROCK LEONARD MEMORIAL 50”; PATRICK, KRUCHKA, BOUGHTON, & FOSTER ALSO VICTORIOUS

by Tommy Goudge (August 16, 2013) – 100 drivers signed in to race on Gale’s Auto Aftermarket “Brock Leonard Memorial Night” and KidsRace Canadian National Autism Foundation night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday. Kyle Patrick and Mikey Kruchka took Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature wins, while Ryan Turner won the 2nd annual “Brock Leonard Memorial 50” for the Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, Davey Boughton won his 6th HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature of the season, and Chad Foster visited Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane for the first time after the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers feature.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
The Sprint Cars had some extra racing on their schedule on Friday night, as their postponed A-Feature from July 19 was run before the week’s regularly scheduled racing.

Glenn Styres and Kyle Patrick started on the front row of the make up feature, but a lap wasn’t completed before Jared Zimbardi got sideways in turn 2 and collected points leader Jim Huppunen. Zimbardi’s front end was too heavily damaged for him to continue, while Huppunen’s crew was able to make repairs. Mitch Brown got to the front when the race restarted, and opened an early lead. The race was slowed several more times, as Scott Sherk spun in turn 3 and collected Todd Hoddick, while Glenn Styres spun in turn 3 on two separate occasions. Jim Huppunen wasted no time getting back in contention, as he was already back in the top 10 by lap 8.

Brown’s lead evaporated each time a caution flag came out, and Kyle Patrick took advantage by taking the lead at the halfway mark. Patrick had to stay ahead of Chris Steele for one final restart after a nasty crash on the front stretch involving Kyle Moffit, who climbed uninjured from his heavily-damaged car. Patrick took his second win of the season, followed by Steele. Jim Huppunen got by Steve Collins for third on the last lap, while Collins crossed the line fourth, followed by row 10 starter Jamie Collard. Collins was disqualified after the race for a technical infraction, which allowed row 11 starter Mikey Kruchka to claim the 5th spot.

Mikey Kruchka and Jamie Collard began the regularly-scheduled Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Collard led the first lap, but Shane Ross got by both of them to take the lead on lap 2. The sophomore driver was able to stay in the lead for 3 laps before Chris Steele moved into the lead, but Steele led just 2 laps before Collard got by to lead lap 7. Collard’s lead was short-lived again though, as Mikey Kruchka went from 4th to 1st on lap 8, and went on to take a feature win for the second straight week.

Collard chased Kruchka to the finish line, and survived a close call with 2 laps to go to take the runner-up spot. Dain Naida got the third spot, followed by Glenn Styres, and Jim Huppunen. The race went start to finish without a caution flag, and Mikey Kruchka set a new track record for a 20 lap Sprint Car race at 5:45.197, with Jamie Collard also under the previous record held by Tom Huppunen.

Heat races for the 28 car field were claimed by Conor Mahoney, Jim Huppunen, and Shane Ross, while Kyle Patrick won the B-Main, and Jim Huppunen won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for accruing the most heat race passing points.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS “BROCK LEONARD MEMORIAL 50”
Brett Rodwell and Robbie General made up the front row for the 2nd annual Brock Leonard Memorial race for the Thunder Stocks, but Chris Dickie led the first 2 laps before Ryan Turner made a beeline to the lead from his starting spot in row 6, with brother Cory close behind. Karl Sault also moved up early, and took the 2nd position from Cory Turner on lap 9. Ryan Turner and Karl Sault ran nose-to-tail for much of the rest of the 50 lap distance, with Sault occasionally getting alongside as the pair raced through traffic.

Dave Silverthorn, Jr. was also on the move early in the race, and was into the top 10 from his row 11 starting spot by lap 9. Silverthorn continued to pick up more spots, and took the third position from Cory Turner just before the halfway mark. Silverthorn was more than 7 seconds behind the leader, but a yellow flag helped to erase some of that deficit. He restarted with several lapped machines between himself and the two leaders, but eventually got by those cars and ran down Sault and Turner, who swapped the lead several times with less than 15 laps remaining. Ryan Turner was able to use slower traffic to retake the lead on lap 46, and keep Sault and Silverthorn at bay to get the big win. Sault settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Silverthorn, Jack Myers, and points leader Lee Winger.

Heat races for the 34 car field were claimed by Brett Rodwell, Mike Thorne, Lee Winger, and Pete Reid, while Brad Herron won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Mike Giberson and Jade Pelletier led the field to the green flag in the Mini Stock feature, but Brittani Myers took the lead early in the race for the second week in a row. Davey Boughton was on a mission to atone for last week’s flat tire which cost him a feature win though, and eventually took the lead and went on to win his 6th feature of the season. Jason Lungaro moved through the field from close to the rear for the second week in a row, and took the second spot, followed by Jeremy May, Alex Schuts, and Brittani Myers.

Heat races for the 24 car field were claimed by Chad Smelser, Jeremy May, and Davey Boughton.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Chad Foster and Tim DeBoer started up front in the Bomber feature, and Foster took the early lead. The race was red flagged for a wild flip by Mark Bazuin, who climbed out of his car uninjured. Foster held off several determined drivers to get his first career feature win, followed by Bob Burgess, Brady Longboat, Dusty DeBoer, and Tim DeBoer.

Heat races for the 14 car field were claimed by Tim DeBoer and Dusty Deboer.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS BROCK LEONARD MEMORIAL 50?
The Thunder Stocks will contest the longest race of their season this week in the running of the Brock Leonard Memorial 50?. The race honours Brock Leonard, a long-time speedway official and friend to many in the Ontario racing community, who passed away last season at age 62.

Brad Herron topped a talented 36 car field to win the inaugural ‘Brock Leonard Memorial 50″ on August 24, 2012. Herron will try to repeat this Friday, but a host of competitors are looking to add their names to the special trophy.

Lee Winger leads the Thunder Stock standings heading into this Friday’s big race, but he is just 2 points ahead of Jim Lampman, and 14 points ahead of third place Cory Turner. Bryce Richardson is fourth, but just
31 points behind the leader, followed by defending champion Mike Thorne, who is 48 points from the lead.

Cory Turner, Karl Sault, and Wyatt Van Wart each have 2 Thunder Stock feature wins this season, while Bryce Richardson, Ryan Turner, Chris Dickie, Jack Myers, Lee Winger, and Dave Silverthorn, Jr. have each taken a feature win as well.

Karl Sault leads Dave Silverthorn, Jr. by just 2 points in the Thunder Stock Rookie of the Year standings.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Davey Boughton was on his way to another feature win last Friday, until his flat tire on the last lap allowed Jason Lungaro to take the victory.
Boughton was still able to take the runner-up spot, and extended his lead in the points standings as a result. Alex Schuts is second in the standings, followed by Jason Lungaro, and a fifth place tie between Laura Hughes and Chase Hess.

Davey Boughton has claimed 5 Mini Stock feature wins this season, while Alex Shuts has won 2, and Laura Hughes, Rodney Rutherford, Mike Taylor, and Jason Lungaro have scored 1 each.

Davey Boughton also leads the Mini Stock Rookie of the Year standings over Alex Schuts.

KRUCHKA, SILVERTHORN, LUNGARO, & LONGBOAT TAKE FEATURE WINS ON METAL WORKS NIGHT

by Tommy Goudge (August 16, 2013) –  100 drivers signed in to race on Metal Works “SOS vs. Corr/Pak” night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. Mikey Kruchka took a popular win in the Southern Ontario Sprints versus Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars feature, while Dave Silverthorn, Jr. got his first dirt track win in the Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks feature, Jason Lungaro drove from last to first in the HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature, and Brady Longboat visited Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane after the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers feature.

SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS VS. CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Dain Naida and Stan Zanchin were the front row starters for the 25 lap Sprint Car feature, but Chris Steele utilized the outside groove to take the lead before the first lap was complete. Steele fought off several advances from Naida, while Mikey Kruchka began to move steadily through the field from his 4th row starting spot. Engine trouble for Mitch Brown brought out a caution flag on lap 10, when the 3rd place driver in both the Corr/Pak and SOS championship chases laid down a big streak of oil. Steele still led Naida at this point, with Brown dropping out of the third spot, which was then inherited by Kruchka, followed by Jim Huppunen and Justin Barger.

Huppunen was quick on the restart, and challenged Kruchka for third, but another caution flag fell for a spin by Mike Ferrell before the lap was complete. Kruchka got a better restart the second time, and moved around Naida for the second position on lap 12, then went to work tracking down Steele, who was still running the top groove while Kruchka rolled around the bottom. Kruchka made the eventual winning move on lap 16, and went on to take his second career Sprint Car feature win. Steele had to back off as he and Kruchka almost collided while passing a slower car, and then held on to the runner-up spot despite a late charge by Justin Barger, who settled for third, followed by Dain Naida, and Jim Huppunen.

Heat races for the 33 car field were claimed by Shane Ross, Mikey Kruchka, Jared Zimbardi, and Stan Zanchin, while Jim Huppunen and Glenn Styres won the B-Mains, and Mikey Kruchka won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” Award for accruing the most passing points in heat race competition.

Corr/Pak division points leader Jim Huppunen had to qualify from a B-Main, but made up for lost time in the feature by moving from 17th on the grid to finish 5th. Glenn Styres lost the oil filter on his car while leading the 4th heat race, which caused his #0 to go up in flames for the second week in a row. Styres drove from last to first in his B-Main, and then 18th to 8th in the feature. SOS points leader Chris Jones started 14th and finished 7th, finishing in front of his challengers for that championship in the process.

The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars will run their postponed B-Main and A-Feature from the July 19 rainout next Friday, August 23, along with their regularly scheduled event.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Shaun Quinn and Brett Rodwell started on the front row for the 20 lap Thunder Stock feature, and Rodwell was the first of 6 different drivers to lead at least one lap. Trevor DeBoer led lap 3 before Mike Thorne took over at the front, but Thorne and Cory Turner made contact, with Thorne eventually dropping back.

Turner took over the lead on lap 8, but found himself running side-by-side with Bryce Richardson for almost half the race, which allowed Dave Silverthorn, Jr. to sneak around both of them, and lead the last 4 laps of the race for his first ever dirt track feature win. Richardson got the second spot, followed by Turner, Karl Sault, and Lee Winger.

Heat races for the 29 car field were claimed by Terry Martin, Kevin Dawson, and Chris Dickie, while Brad Herron won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jade Pelletier and Mike Giberson started the 15 lap feature on the front row, but Brittani Myers quickly got to the front, followed closely by Jamie Goudge. Those two broke away from the pack early in the race, but the championship contenders were marching forward from their handicapped starting positions deeper in the field, and a lap 10 caution flag brought everyone back into contention.

Points leader Davey Boughton eventually got to the lead and looked to have his 6th feature win of the season wrapped up until his right front tire went flat on the final lap. Jason Lungaro had started dead last, and was up to 2nd when Boughton’s tire went flat. Lungaro got by in turn 3 and took his first win of the season, while Boughton settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Jeremy May, Chase Hess, and Lucas Lubin.

Heat races for the 23 car field were claimed by Brittani Myers, Chase Hess, and Laura Hughes.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Brady Longboat started on the outside of the front row and led much of the 12 lap Bomber feature, but Jesse McDonald was close behind Longboat at the end. McDonald made contact with an infield implement tire and bounced up into Longboat’s back bumper near the end of the race, but Longboat carried on to get his 3rd feature win of the season. McDonald settled for second, followed by Dusty DeBoer, Wayde Thorne, and Valen Longboat.

Heat races for the 15 car field were claimed by Brady Longboat and Dusty DeBoer.

CORR/PAK SPRINT CARS VS. SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS THIS FRIDAY

Ohsweken, Ontario – August 14, 2013 – Ohsweken Speedway’s 18th season of racing continues this Friday, August 16 when Metal Works presents “Corr/Pak vs. SOS” night. This week’s event features the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars versus the Southern Ontario Sprints tour, plus Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS VS. SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS
This Friday features the third of three challenge events this season between traveling Sprint Car series and the regulars of the weekly Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division, with a $1,700 prize on the line for the winner of the 25 lap feature. The Ontario-based Southern Ontario Sprints tour drivers are the foes for Corr/Pak drivers defending home turf this time, although some drivers do race with both groups, and will be earning valuable points in both championship chases.

Chris Jones of Demorestville, Ontario took over at the top of the SOS standings by winning his third consecutive SOS feature last Saturday at Brighton Speedway. Jamie Collard is currently 2nd in the SOS standings and just 3 points behind Jones, followed by Mitch Brown, Keith Dempster, Warren Mahoney, Glenn Styres, Bob Crawford, Tyler Rand, and a 10th place tie between Dain Naida and Brad Lodge. Other SOS drivers expected on Friday include Brad Lodge, Chris Durand, Kyle Fraser, Frank Baranowski, and Jim Munsie.

Glenn Styres won the opening round for the SOS on May 18 at Brighton Speedway, while Jamie Collard won at Brighton on June 8, and Chris Jones won at Brighton on July 13 and August 10, and South Buxton Raceway on August 3.

Jim Huppunen will lead Ohsweken’s weekly Sprint Car drivers in defending their home turf, as the 2011 Corr/Pak champion won his first feature of the season on Friday night. Huppunen currently sits atop the Corr/Pak standings, followed by Jamie Collard, Mitch Brown, Shane Ross, Todd Hoddick, Derek Jonathan, Chris Steele, a 9th place tie between Glenn Styres and Jamie Turner, and Keith Dempster. Tom Huppunen, Havard Daniels, Dain Naida, Conor Mahoney, Steve Goldner, and Mikey Kruchka are also among the regular Corr/Pak racers expected to compete this Friday.

Glenn Styres won the Corr/Pak features on May 17, May 24, and June 14, while Kyle Patrick won the Corr/Pak feature on June 7, Jason Barney won the Corr/Pak vs. PST feature on June 21, Jamie Collard won the Corr/Pak feature on July 5, Steve Poirier won the Corr/Pak vs. ESS feature on July 12, Mitch Brown won the Corr/Pak feature on July 26, Shane Stewart won the Northern Summer Nationals on July 29, and Jim Huppunen won the Corr/Pak feature on August 9.

Warren Mahoney enters the weekend as the most recent winner in Sprint Car competition in the province, as the former SOS champion won without a wing with the Ontario Topless Sprints at Humberstone Speedway on Sunday night. Warren’s father Dick will not be in competition this Friday due to a crash in that same Sunday event, along with another the previous night at Brighton.

Friday’s race is a full points event for both groups, and will also serve as the SOS qualifier for the TJSlideways.com Ohsweken Shootout, which is scheduled to kick off Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend on Friday, September 13.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Last Friday was busy for the Thunder Stock racers, with a regularly scheduled event, plus a make up feature from the July 19 postponement. Lee Winger won the make up feature, while Wyatt Van Wart got his second win of the season in the regular feature.

Lee Winger has moved into a tie for the lead in the points standings with Jim Lampman, while Cory Turner is now third, followed by Bryce Richardson, and Mike Thorne.

Karl Sault took over at the top of the Rookie of the Year standings, but his lead is just 11 points over Dave Silverthorn, Jr.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
The Mini Stocks will be “back to normal” with a 15 lap feature this week after last Friday’s 42 lap Art Hill Memorial race. Davey Boughton is the current points leader, followed by Alex Schuts, Laura Hughes, Jason Lungaro, and Chase Hess.

2013 Results, News

TAYLOR WINS “ART HILL MEMORIAL 42”; HUPPUNEN, VAN WART, WINGER, & DEBOER ALSO VICTORIOUS

by Tommy Goudge (August 9, 2013) –  102 drivers signed in to race on Rochester Knighthawks “Art Hill Memorial” night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. Jim Huppunen, Lee Winger, Wyatt Van Wart, Mike Taylor, and Dusty DeBoer took the feature wins..

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Shane Ross and Mikey Kruchka made up the front row for the Sprint Car feature, and Kruchka took off in search of his 2nd career feature win. His lead was erased when Jeremy Hughes spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow flag, and again when Glenn Styres’ engine went up in flames in turn 3.

Jamie Collard eventually got by Kruchka, but Jim Huppunen charged back through the pack after falling to as far as 6th place. Huppunen got around Kruchka with 3 laps to go, and set his sights on Collard. Huppunen made a move between Collard and slower car in turns 3 and 4 on the last lap to take his first win of the season, and extend his lead in the points standings.

Collard settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Mikey Kruchka, Mitch Brown, and Chris Steele. Heat races for the 19 car field were claimed by Mitch Brown, Derek Jonathan, and Jim Huppunen, while Jamie Collard won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for scoring the most heat race passing points.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
The Thunder Stocks had some extra racing on their schedule on Friday night, as their postponed B-Main and A-Feature from July 19 were run before the week’s regularly scheduled racing.

Rob Disher and Brett Rodwell made up the front row for the first feature, but Cory Turner quickly made his way to the lead from row 4. Turner led until the final lap, when he and Jack Myers made contact, and Lee Winger got around them to take the win. Jake Brown, Jack Myers, Chris Dickie, and Brad Herron finished out the top 5, while Cory Turner crossed 6th.

The second feature began with Melissa Miller and Robbie General on the front row, but Wyatt Van Wart quickly made his way through the field from row 6 to take the lead by lap 3. Van Wart led the rest of the way, while Lee Winger, Bryce Richardson, Jim Lampman, and Brad Herron chased Van Wart across the finish line.

Heat races for the 33 car field were claimed by Ryan Beagle, Bryce Richardson, Ryan Dinning, and Karl Sault, while Mike Thorne won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS “ART HILL MEMORIAL 42”
The longest feature of the Mini Stock season began with Brittani Myers and Brandon Janssens sharing the front row. Chase Hess and Jason Lungaro made their way to the front and broke away from the pack for awhile, but Mike Taylor eventually ran them down.

Lungaro was leading, but had trouble getting through traffic, which allowed Taylor to make a move to the inside. Lungaro made contact with a slower car and was penalized for rough driving, while a promising night ended for Hess at the same time with an electrical fire on his car.

Taylor kept the Dave Bailey-owned #31 up front for the rest of the grueling race, while Rocco Conte came from the B-Main to take the runner-up spot, followed by Mark Czuba, Dan Erskine, and Jonathan Ayrton.

Heat races for the 36 car field were claimed by Brandon Janssens, Chase Hess, Alex Schuts, and Jason Lungaro, while Steve Miller won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Clinton Nicholls and Bobby Burgess were scheduled to be on the front row for the Bomber feature, but Burgess stepped out of his ride to allow Dusty DeBoer to start the race after DeBoer’s car broke in his heat race. That move proved crucial, as Jesse McDonald crossed the finish line first, but did not pass technical inspection.

Dusty DeBoer charged through the field to cross the line behind McDonald, and was awarded the feature win when McDonald was disqualified. Brady Longboat, Max Chechalk, Mark Bazuin, and Adam Hallett rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 14 car field were claimed by Brady Longboat and Jesse McDonald.

“ART HILL MEMORIAL 42” FOR MINI STOCKS, & DOUBLE FEATURES FOR THUNDER STOCKS THIS WEEK

Ohsweken, Ontario – August 7, 2013 – Ohsweken Speedway’s championship chases enter their stretch drive as the 18th season of racing continues this Friday, August 9 when the Rochester Knighthawks present “Art Hill Memorial Night”. This week’s event features the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks in the annual “Art Hill Memorial 42”, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers, plus the rescheduled Thunder Stock B-Main and Feature from July 19.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
The Sprint Car standings have tightened up at the top lately, as Jim Huppunen had problems late in the Northern Summer Nationals and did not finish. Huppunen still leads heading into this Friday’s Ohsweken Shootout qualifier, but Mitch Brown has closed to within just 19 points, while Jamie Collard is just 4 points behind Brown. Shane Ross and Todd Hoddick hold the 4th and 5th positions respectively, with just over a month left in the season.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
The race for the Thunder Stock championship continues to be extremely competitive, with a new points leader seemingly taking over every week. Jim Lampman is now atop the list, but his lead is just 8 points over Cory Turner, and 14 over defending champ Mike Thorne. Bryce Richardson and Lee Winger round out the top 5, and are just 24 and 40 points behind Lampman, respectively.

Extra points are up for grabs this Friday, as the Thunder Stocks will run the B-Main and Feature which were rained out on July 19, along with this week’s regularly scheduled program.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS “ART HILL MEMORIAL 42”
The annual “Art Hill Memorial 42” is the biggest event of the season for the Mini Stock racers, with a feature race more than twice the distance of their regular races. The race honours Art Hill, who suffered a fatal brain aneurysm while competing in his #42 machine in a race at Ohsweken in 1999.

Karl Sault won the 2012 Art Hill Memorial, but has moved to Thunder Stocks this season, leaving the door open for a new $1,000 winner. Mini Stock rookie Davey Boughton leads the Mini Stock standings heading into Friday’s race, with Jason Lungaro his nearest challenger, followed by Alex Schuts, Laura Hughes, and Robin Elliott.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
The Bomber division title continues to be closely contested, as Jesse McDonald has a slim 5 point lead over Tim DeBoer. Dusty DeBoer is 3rd, followed by Max Chechalk, and Brady Longboat.
