STEELE, TURKEY, THOMPSON, LAFANTAISIE, & HILS TAKE WINS ON STYRES GAS BAR NIGHT

by Tommy Goudge (May 30, 2014) –  Chris Steele, Aaron Turkey, James Thompson, Tyler Lafantaisie, and Gillian Hils took the feature wins as 107 drivers signed in to race on Styres Gas Bar Night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, May 30.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Chris Steele and Mikey Kruchka started the 360 Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Steele began to open a sizable lead running the low groove early in the race. Kruchka maintained the second position, with Mitch Brown giving chase in third. The first 16 laps of the race were run without incident, and Steele lost some of his lead while negotiating traffic, but Kruchka couldn’t get close enough to challenge for the lead.

Jessica Zemken brought out the only caution flag of the race on lap 16 when her right rear tire exploded, bunching the field for a 4 lap dash to the finish. Todd Hoddick had been using the high side of the track to gain positions before the caution flag, and was 4th behind Steele, Kruchka, and Brown for the restart. Steele opened a lead again, but Hoddick was the driver to watch as he was up to 2nd with two laps to go. Nobody could catch Steele though, as he claimed the third 360 Sprint Car feature win of his career, while Kruchka fought back and beat Hoddick to the line by inches. Mitch Brown and Glenn Styres rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 18 car field were claimed by Justin Martin, Dave Dykstra, and Shane Ross.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS

Tyler Hendricks and Robbie General made up the front row for the Crate Sprint Car feature, but Kyle Durnin took the lead from General on lap 3. Durnin opened a lead, while Aaron Turkey took over the second spot, and 10th starter Jake Brown was on the move. Brown was in the top 5 by lap 4, and took third from General on lap 8, while Turkey began to reel Durnin back in, despite a bent front wing.

Paul Lang brought out a caution flag when he spun on lap 11, and erased what was left of Durnin’s lead. Durnin was strong when the race restarted though, and stayed up front for the last 4 laps. Turkey crossed the line second, while Tyler Hendricks stole the third spot from Brown on the last lap, and General rounded out the top 5. Turkey’s apparent runner-up finish turned into a win when Durnin’s car was found to be slightly underweight in post-race technical inspection, while Ryan Hunsinger moved into the top 5 as a result.

Heat races for the 11 car field were claimed by Mike Thorne and Ryan Hunsinger.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Dave Bailey and Trevor DeBoer started the Thunder Stock feature on the front row, and Bailey led the first lap before Chris Dickie took over the lead on lap 2. A crash on lap 11 took several competitors out of contention, including Bailey. Opening night feature winner Wyatt Van Wart took the lead from Dickie on the restart, but B-Main winner James Thompson was on the move and took the lead from Van Wart with 5 laps to go. Thompson had started the race in the 11th row, while Dave Silverthorn, Jr. moved into the top 5 from 19th on the grid.

The race was stopped with 3 laps to go when Laura Hughes flipped in turn 2. She was able to climb out of her heavily damaged car uninjured. Thompson stayed up front to get his first Ohsweken win after the 3 lap dash to the finish, followed by Van Wart, Lee Winger, Silverthorn, and Dickie.

Heat races for the 35 car field were claimed by Lee Winger, Ryan Dinning, Dave Bailey, and Billy Bleich, Jr., while James Thompson won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Dave Goodacre and Mark Bazuin began the Mini Stock feature on the front row, but it didn’t take long for Tyler Lafantaisie and Jason Lungaro to get to the front and fight for the lead. The race was stopped when Mike Taylor and Sarah Rutherford crashed hard exiting turn 4, with Taylor getting upside down. Both drivers were able to get out of their damaged cars with assistance from the safety crew, but Rutherford did go to the hospital for further evaluation.

Lafantaisie amd Lungaro resumed their fight for the lead when the race restarted, but Lungaro’s car faltered, and he eventually dropped out of the race. A spin by Jamie Goudge brought about a dash to the finish, and Lafantaisie held off 17th starter Lee Hils by mere inches to get his first Ohsweken win. Hils settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Goodacre, Brandon Janssens, and Mark Bazuin.

Heat races for the 27 car field were claimed by Mike Evers, Brandon Janssens, and Jason Lungaro while Chris Ryckman won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Gillian Hils and Paul Longboat started the Bomber feature on the front row, and Hils was able to negotiate traffic and hold off 2013 champ Dusty DeBoer to get her first Ohsweken win. DeBoer settled for the runner-up spot again, while Thomas Booker, Ashton Reekie, and opening night feature winner Joe DeBoer rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the 16 car field were claimed by Joe DeBoer and Lucas Smith.

STYRES, HUNSINGER, VAN WART, MAY, & DEBOER TAKE WINS ON WOODSTOCK FORD NIGHT

by Tommy Goudge (May 23, 2014) –  111 drivers signed in to race on Woodstock Ford night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. Glenn Styres, Ryan Hunsinger, Wyatt Van Wart, Jeremy May, and Joe DeBoer were the first drivers to visit Mobil 1 Victory Lane in 2014.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Sprint Car rookie Shawn Sliter and 2008 track champion Keith Dempster shared the front row for the first feature of the season, but row two starter and 2010 champ Dave Dykstra got by both of them to take the early lead. Mitch Brown quickly moved into second and began to put pressure on Dykstra, while Paige Polyak moved into third.

Mikey Kruchka, Todd Hoddick, and Glenn Styres were the only drivers consistently using the high side of the track for much of the race, and all three were able to make passes that way. Kruchka started 12th, but was already in the top five after the completion of lap 5, and into third at the halfway mark of the race. Hoddick was in the top 5 when contact with the frontstretch wall ended his race.

Kruchka went to work on Dykstra and Brown when the race restarted, and passed them both between laps 13 and 15. Styres was into 6th by lap 16, and had moved to 2nd when a caution flag was thrown for the stopped car of Chris Steele on lap 18. A two lap shootout followed, with Styres able to make the winning move in turn 2 on the last lap, and claim his 20th feature victory at Ohsweken. Kruchka, Brown, Dykstra, and 15th starter Jim Huppunen rounded out the top 5.

Heat races for the  car field were claimed by Stan Zanchin, Dave Dykstra, and Mitch Brown, while Kyle Patrick won the B-Main.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
The first ever Crate Sprint Car feature in Ohsweken Speedway history began with Aaron Turkey and Ryan Hunsinger on the front row, and Hunsinger quickly took the lead. The former 360 Sprint Car driver led all the laps on his way to victory, while Turkey dropped out of the second position with a broken rear end with 5 laps to go.

Jake Brown and Brad Herron diced for the runner-up spot, with Herron eventually taking that position, followed by Brown, Paul Lang, and Robbie General.

Heat races for the 11 car field were claimed by Aaron Turkey, and Ryan Hunsinger.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Dave Silverthorn, Jr. and Dave Bailey began the Thunder Stock feature on the front row, and Silverthorn took the early lead, while Wyatt Van Wart moved up to the second spot. Those two raced for the lead for much of the race, until Derek Liverance made contact with Silverthorn as the leaders were trying to get around him. Van Wart avoided the trouble and went on to the feature win, followed by Karl Sault, Billy Bleich, Jr., Dave Bailey, and Lee Winger.

Heat races for the 32 car field were claimed by Billy Bleich, Jr., Jack Myers, and Lee Winger, while Chris Dickie won the B-Main.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jeremy May and Dan Erskine made up the front row for the Mini Stock feature, and May took the lead in a car borrowed from Jeremy Hughes. May fought off early challenges from Jason Lungaro, and kept the rest the field behind him to go on to his first feature win. Tyler Lafantaisie, Jon Janssens, Lucas Lubin, and Lungaro rounded out the top five.

Heat races for the 30 car field were claimed by Tyler Lafantaisie, Rob Slater, and Rob Hoskins while Tim DeBoer won the B-Main.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Dusty DeBoer and Joe DeBoer were the front row starters for the Bomber feature, and Dusty led much of the race until he went to the outside of a slower car and almost missed the first turn entirely. Joe was able to hang on to the lead after that, and went on to take the feature win, with Dusty settling for the runner-up spot. Gillian Hils, Paul Longboat, and Ashton Reekie made up the rest of the top 5.

Heat races for the 14 car field were claimed by Dusty DeBoer, and Joe DeBoer.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Jim Huppunen enters the 360 Sprint Car season opener with a target on his back, as he claimed the 2013 track championship. Huppunen, who also won the 2011 title, became the first driver in the history of the division to win two championships. Past champions Keith Dempster, Tom Huppunen, Dave Dykstra, and Chris Steele are just a few of the others capable of challenging for this year’s title, along with 2013 feature winners Glenn Styres, Kyle Patrick, Mitch Brown, and Mikey Kruchka, plus many more. Brown and Kruchka both have feature wins this season, after they claimed Southern Ontario Sprints victories at Brighton Speedway and Humberstone Speedway last weekend.

The Rookie of the Year award will also be hotly contested, with multiple Thunder Stock feature winner Cory Turner, former Mod-Lite champ Shawn Sliter, and Wonderland Speedway graduate Curtis Gartly set to join the Sprint Car ranks.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Ryan Hunsinger has four 360 Sprint Car feature wins at Ohsweken on his resume, and will be a favourite to win the inaugural Crate Sprint Car division championship. He’ll have challenges from several talented open wheel rookies from the Ohsweken stock car ranks, including 2011 and 2012 Thunder Stock champion Mike Thorne, 2013 Mini Stock champion Davey Boughton, 2012 Brock Leonard Memorial 50 winner Brad Herron, former Thunder Stock racers Jake Brown, Robbie General, and Aaron Turkey, and former Mini Stock racer Mark Czuba.

The new division, which utilizes the GM 602 crate engine, has also attracted attention from former Mosport Modified champ and asphalt Late Model veteran Tyler Hendricks, Hurricane Midget series racer K.J. Durnin, Flamboro Speedway Mini Stock driver Josh Shantz, and Mike Westwood, a veteran of several different asphalt divisions.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Lee Winger will return to the Thunder Stock division to defend his 2013 championship, but he’s sure to have lots of competition for the title. Wyatt Van Wart, Karl Sault, and Dave Silverthorn, Jr. all claimed Thunder Stock feature wins last season and plan to be back this year. Bryce Richardson, Jim Lampman, and Chris Dickie all finished in the top 6 in the championship standings last year in what was the most competitive season in the division’s history.

The quest for the Rookie of the Year award will also be competitive. As many as 9 drivers could be going after that honour, including Laura Hughes and Chase Hess, who both claimed Mini Stock feature wins last year, plus former Mini Stock racers Brittani Myers and John Cote.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Davey Boughton won the 2013 Mini Stock championship, but has moved to Crate Sprint Cars this year, leaving the door open for a new champ. Alex Schuts and Jason Lungaro finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in last year’s Mini Stock standings, and will be favourites to win the title this year, but more than 30 drivers have already pre-registered to race in the Mini Stock division in 2014. Steve Miller, Jonathan Ayrton, Dave Goodacre, Jeremy May, and Jon Janssens all finished in the top 10 in the Mini Stock standings last season, and are among those drivers who have already registered.

The chase for the Rookie of the Year award will include at least 7 drivers, including Bomber graduates Tim DeBoer, Wayde Thorne, Adam Hallett, and Mark Bazuin.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Dusty DeBoer will be back to defend his 2013 Bomber championship, and he’ll certainly have lots of competition from the always unpredictable division. Max Chechalk is one driver who will give DeBoer a good challenge, as he has been in the title hunt on multiple occasions, and won several features too. Clinton Nicholls, Gillian Hils, and Dakota Potts finished in the top 10 in last year’s standings and plan to be back this year as well.

“TOP 10”…WITH THUNDER STOCK CHAMP LEE WINGER

By Tommy Goudge (May 16, 2014) – Drivers and teams from Ohsweken Speedway are ready to get going with the 2014 racing season. Lee Winger took some time recently to look back at his 2013 Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stock division championship, and ahead to his plans for 2014 and beyond.

Lee Winger has been racing regularly at Ohsweken Speedway for 14 years, and has seen a lot of changes during that time. He started in the HRW Automotive Mini Stock division, before moving to the Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks. Lee won several big races during his career, including the 2003 Art Hill Memorial 42, but finally won his first Ohsweken track championship last season. The Season Championship feature began with 4 drivers separated by just 33 points at the top of the standings. Lee was able to overcome a mid-race spin, and take the title in one of the closest title races in the history of the speedway. He will return this season with his #2 Camaro to go for a second championship.

LEE WINGER – FAST FACTS
Car #: 2
Birthdate: April 4, 1986
Hometown: Caledonia, Ontario
Sponsors: Big Moose Fishing, and O’Neil’s Farm Equipment

TG: “How did you get involved in racing, and who were the people who helped you learn the ropes when you were starting out?

LW: “My dad bought me a go-kart when I was 8. I started racing at on a pavement oval when i was 10, and later moved to Hamilton Kart Club. I began racing Mini Stocks at Ohsweken Speedway when I was 13. Some of the people who have helped me include Paul Barton, Scott McPhail, and most recently Dave Bailey.”

TG: “You have been racing for a long time, even though you’re still in your 20’s. What do you remember about your first trip to Ohsweken?”

LW: “My first trip to Ohsweken was a memory-filled night with lots of spin outs. It was the first time I ever really drove a car by myself.”

TG: ‘You sometimes race up to three nights per week at Ohsweken, Merrittville, and Humberstone. How much weekly maintenance work do you have to do when you’re racing that much, and how many changes do you have to make to the car between the different tracks?”

LW: “I found that I got my car to work well at all tracks, including Brighton Speedway. It all depends on the night, and track conditions. Most tracks see the same dry slick conditions, especially in the summer.”

TG: “You had to drive through the field after a spin in the Season Championship feature last season. Sometimes a driver can let frustration take over, but you kept your focus and won the championship. What were you thinking before that restart, with all those cars between you and the title?”

LW: “It was very frustrating, especially being in the top 5 at the time. Anything can happen in the Thunder Stock division at Ohsweken. You can pass 10 cars in one lap, and get caught up in a wreck the next. You just have to tighten your belts, go as hard as you can, and do your best. I definitely have to thank my sponsors – especially Dean and Brenda Richardson – I could not have done it without their support”

TG: “A quick look at the results from Ohsweken every week shows quite a few drivers from Caledonia. Obviously it’s close to Ohsweken, but why do you think we see so many racers from that town?”

LW: “A lot of the drivers from Caledonia grew up around each other. The track is only 10 minutes away, which makes it very accessible, and on a quiet night you can hear the Sprint Cars roaring around the Big O.”

TG: “You’ve been around since the days when we only had 10-12 Thunder Stocks racing on some Friday nights. Why do you think the division has grown so much in the last few years?”

LW: “I would have to say the level of competition, and the division is semi-affordable. Street Stocks are highly competitive at any race track, but nothing like Ohsweken. Going 7 wide can get pretty intense.”

TG: “There is a lot of competition in the Thunder Stock division, with at least 30 cars almost every night last year. Drivers are bound to slip under the radar sometimes, with that many people competing every night. Who do you think is the most underrated driver and/or team in the division?”

LW: “Definitely Dave Bailey. Dave is a good friend of mine, and will always lend a hand, or answer a question. Just ask him about his good friend geometry – You will learn caster and camber in no time!”

TG: “You’ve driven both a ‘metric’ car and a Camaro in the Thunder Stock division. A lot of feature wins were claimed by the Camaros last season. What are the differences between the two in terms of driving style and setup?”

LW: “I didn’t find much difference in setup or driving style. I’ve had success in both cars.”

TG: “Eventually the Thunder Stock/Street Stock type divisions at a lot of tracks are going to have to evolve, as cars become older and harder to find and get parts for. What would you like the Thunder Stock division to look like in 10-20 years?”

LW: “I have no idea. I would think you will see more of late model type body, or maybe an IMCA modified style car. They still use a factory front clip.”

TG: “You’re still a young man, but you’ve been racing for a long time. What keeps you motivated to put in the work every year to keep going, how long do you think you’ll continue to race, and what are your future racing goals?”

LW: “I love racing, and I love being part of Ohsweken Speedway. I plan on racing as long as I can. As far as goals I don’t really have any. I just want to have fun with friends at the track, win races, and do the best I can.”
