360 SPRINT CARS (65 entries)
Bryan Howland made history in the most exciting finish in Canadian Sprint Car Nationals history, becoming the first driver to win the CSCN A-Feature after qualifying from a B-Feature. The 28 year old New Yorker also got some vindication from the track where he received a broken shoulder and fractured leg in 2010, officially leading only laps 33 and 35 to steal the $12,000 prize from Steve Poirier, Parker Price-Miller, and a quickly-closing Mark Smith.

The 35 lap A-Feature began with 3-time CSCN winner Poirier and Jason Barney at the front of the 30 car field, but the race was slowed with just 1 lap complete when Yan Bilodeau coasted to a stop after contact with Brad Loyet in turn one. Bilodeau saw something fly off his car after the contact and suspected that he had broken a suspension part. The debris turned out to be a nerf bar, which the track safety crew retrieved, and Bilodeau was able to restart and eventually be credited with 14th.

The yellow flag wasn’t seen again, and the next 34 laps of green flag action produced one of the best races in the 20 year history of Ohsweken Speedway. Poirier led the first lap before the yellow flag, while Dustin Daggett took 2nd from Barney, only to lose that spot to Barney when the race restarted. Parker Price-Miller moved from 8th to 4th on that first lap, while 20th starter Howland started his march to the front by gaining 3 spots.

Poirier maintained his lead after the single file restart, while 5th starter Mark Smith briefly slowed and fell back as far as 14th before mounting a comeback. Barney kept Poirier in sight, with Daggett maintaining 3rd until Price-Miller moved past him on lap 6, followed one lap later by Paul Kinney. Traffic quickly became a factor, with Poirier and Barney initially lapping the slower cars faster than Price-Miller.

Howland moved into the top 10 with 25 laps left, and 5 laps later he was into 5th after passing Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Max Stambaugh, Daggett, Rob Dietrick, and Kyle Sauder in quick succession. 11th row starters Jared Horstman and Chuck Hebing were also moving through the field, but their progress was briefly slowed during the middle portions of the race, while Howland’s was not.

Poirier grew his advantage as he continued to race through traffic, but Price-Miller began to close the gap after passing Barney for 2nd on lap 19. Howland passed Kinney for the 4th spot on lap 23, and then got past Barney 5 laps later to set the stage for the electrifying finish.

Price-Miller finally found clear track between himself and Poirier on lap 28 and was on Poirier’s tail with 5 laps to go, throwing a slide job at the leader in turns 1 and 2. Somehow Poirier was able to find room between Price-Miller’s car and the outside wall to slip back into the lead. Price-Miller set up another slider 2 laps later but was rebuffed again by Poirier, who crossed underneath Price-Miller exiting turn 2, while Howland dove low to make it three-wide for the lead.

Howland led lap 33 at the start/finish line by mere inches, but Poirier drove into turn one with the lead again, and drove through the middle groove attempting to split two slower cars. Howland got a big launch off the bottom of turn 2 and pulled a wheelie down the backstretch, but saw that move thwarted when he was pinned behind a slower car while Poirier again drove through the middle groove in turn 3. Poirier officially led at the start/finish line as the white flag flew, but again it was by inches, while Price-Miller was back in the picture.

The three were nose-to-tail down the backstretch on the final lap with a slower car running the low groove in front of them, and 4th place Mark Smith closing in as well. Poirier and Price-Miller both slid high exiting the 4th turn, while Howland drove through the middle groove and pulled ahead just enough to take his first CSCN win despite contact with Poirier at the finish line.

Howland crossed the line just 0.112 seconds ahead of Poirier, with Price-Miller just 0.159 seconds behind Poirier. Smith finished 4th, 0.692 seconds behind the leader, while Kinney rounded out the top 5. Hebing’s run landed him in 6th, followed by Barney, Hafertepe, Horstman, and Dietrick. 2011 CSCN winner Hafertepe had run much of the race with very little air in his right rear tire. Amazingly, all 30 cars were still running at the finish.

65 of the 73 official entries were able to compete on Saturday night. Drivers from 2 Canadian provinces and 8 American states attempted to qualify for the 11th edition of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. 14 drivers competed in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals for the first time, with Parker Price-Miller the highest finishing first-time competitor. Price-Miller also ran the fastest time overall in group time trials to collect the Fastest Qualifier Award, while fellow CSCN rookie Dylan Westbrook claimed the Fastest Canadian Qualifier award. Jordan Thomas and his crew were given Corr/Pak Merchandising “Bill Peer Memorial” Best Appearing Car Award honours, while Mitch Brown  won the Brighton Speedway Highest Finishing SOS Driver award.

360 SPRINT CARS (52 entries)
Brad Loyet and Bryan Howland earned guaranteed starting positions in the September 19 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Feature with victories in the Night Before the Nationals Twin 15’s on Friday night. Each of them started at the front of the field and led from flag to flag, but had to work hard on a very fast track surface.

Loyet set a new 15 lap 360 Sprint Car track record in the first A-Feature at 3:33.107, while Sam Hafertepe, Jr. moved up and wrestled the runner-up spot away from Dylan Westbrook, who settled for 3rd. Scott Kreutter finished 4th, and 8th starter Mark Smith rounded out the top 5.

Howland built a big lead in the second A-Feature, but twice saw his advantage erased by caution flags for Kris Root. The second restart took place on lap 13, and saw 7th starter Jared Horstman throw a banzai move on Howland in turns 1 and 2. Unfazed by the slide job, Howland drove back around Horstman and on to the win. Horstman held off Jordan Thomas, 12th starter Michael Parent, and Justin Barger to take the runner-up spot.

Mitch Brown claimed the win in the annual Night Before the Nationals all-star race, now called the Dave MacLeod Memorial Shootout, and set a new 12 lap 360 Sprint Car track record at 2:47.351.

Max Stambaugh prevailed over Parker Price-Miller in the 2nd annual Kevin Ward, Jr. Young Stars Challenge. The two exchanged slide jobs several times before Stambaugh drove to the win. The only red flag of the night occurred in the Young Stars Challenge when Joe Trenca appeared to suffer a mechanical failure, and collected Alex Hill. Both drivers walked away from the hard collision.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS (18 entries)
Derek Jonathan survived a couple of trips over the edge of the banking to claim his 2nd A-Feature win of the season at Ohsweken, while Jim Huppunen used a slide job to snare the runner-up position from early race leader Dane Lorenc with 2 laps remaining. Lorenc had also slipped off track earlier in the race, allowing Jonathan to get by and eventually claim the win by 2.898 seconds. Huppunen, Lorenc, Cory Turner, and Mitch Brown rounded out the top 5.

Glenn Styres entered the night 22 points ahead of Todd Hoddick in the championship standings, and needing to finish 9th or better in the A-Feature to lock up his 2nd consecutive title. He ended up doing exactly what he needed to do, but his title hopes were in jeopardy after he stopped on the track with a suspected flat tire on lap 16.

Discovering that his tire wasn’t flat after all, Styres restarted well outside the top 10, and advanced to take the 9th spot with 2 laps remaining. Meanwhile, Hoddick faded to 6th after being as high as 3rd.

Styres claimed the championship by 16 points over Hoddick, while Ryan Turner won the Rookie of the Year honours.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS (15 entries)
Jake Brown took the lead of the Crate Sprint Car A-Feature before the halfway mark of the 20 lap race, and went on to claim his first win of the season. Early leader Kyle Durnin spun out of the 3rd spot, creating a 2 lap dash to the finish. Brown got a good restart, leaving Ryan Hunsinger to fight off the challenges of Aaron Turkey and Holly Porter. Brown finished 1.982 seconds ahead of Hunsinger, followed by Porter, Turkey, and Alex Hill.

Dylan Westbrook entered the night only needing to start the A-Feature, and that’s all he was able to do, as he crashed in the first turn along with Mark Czuba and Jeremy Hughes. Josh Shantz was also caught up in the incident, but avoided damage to his car and restarted.

Westbrook won the championship by 23 points over Brown, while Alex Hill won the Rookie of the Year award.

AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS (35 entries)
The Thunder Stock A-Feature was filled with carnage, and many of the 28 starters received some sort of damage during the 25 lap race. Despite that adversity, 23rd starter Ryan Dinning charged through the field to claim his third consecutive win. Chase Hess, Jeremy May, Wyatt Van Wart, and Chris Dickie chased Dinning to the line, with Dickie’s car missing a large portion of the bodywork from the front end.

Dave Bailey entered the night only needing to start either the B-Feature or A-Feature to claim his first Thunder Stock championship. Not content to coast to the finish, he charged to as high as 3rd from his 20th starting position.

Bailey managed to avoid serious damage in several melees, but then went off the edge of the track in turn 3 with 7 laps left in the race and failed to finish an A-Feature at Ohsweken for only the second time this season. The final standings show Bailey 39 points ahead of second place Wyatt Van Wart.

Alex Schuts drove from 26th to 6th, and locked up the Rookie of the Year award.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS (31 entries)
Mark Bazuin quickly drove through the field from his 11th row starting position to take the lead and his 2nd consecutive Mini Stock A-Feature win. Jon Janssens finished 2nd, 1.619 behind Bazuin, followed by 22nd starter Robin Elliott, Gary Hodgson, and 24th starter Tim DeBoer.

The Mini Stock championship was up for grabs heading into the race, as Brandon Janssens held an 11 point lead over Jason Lungaro. Janssens was running in the top 5, but his title hopes looked to be dashed when he crashed exiting turn 4 along with Jake Bazuin and Jamie Goudge on lap 15, but Lungaro’s car had been smoking for much of the race.

Lungaro was sent to the pit area during the caution period to check for possible fluid leaking from his car. He returned to the track, but the smoke became heavier and he was forced to retire from the race, allowing Janssens to hold onto the title by just 7 points.

Shone Evans edged out Jason Dixon for the Rookie of the Year award, winning by just 2 points.

“TOP 10”…WITH THUNDER STOCK DRIVER WYATT VAN WART

By Tommy Goudge (June 29, 2015) – Our series of interviews for the 2015 season continues with Thunder Stock driver Wyatt Van Wart. A graduate of the Bomber and Mini Stock divisions, Wyatt was in contention for the Thunder Stock title right up until the end of the 2014 season, and finished 3rd in the standings, just 28 points behind division champ Dave Silverthorn, Jr.

TG: How did you get involved in racing, and who were the people who helped you learn the ropes when you were starting out?

WVW: Dad made me go kart racing with him. I hated it. Every week we used to go to Cameron Motorsports in Hamilton. I used to spin and come in last every race. It wasn’t ’til the end of the season that I was getting better, so Dad bought me a race kart for the following year.

TG: Which driver(s) do you most enjoy competing against?

WVW: Dave Bailey. He is an excellent racer and drives clean. I had a couple of races last year where we raced side by side for many laps, and it was a different person crossing the finish line every lap. It was great.

TG: What do you remember about the first time you saw racing at Ohsweken Speedway?

WVW: WOW, look how big and wide this place is!

TG: If you could change one thing in racing (a rule, etc.), what would it be?

WVW: Bring back the rebuild-able shocks. I am spending more money on these other shocks. I cannot find the right ones.

TG: If money were no object and you could race anywhere, in anything, what would you choose?

WVW: World of Outlaws Late Model Racing Series all year long in North America.

TG: What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to get involved in racing that you would like to have been given when you started?

WVW: If you are coming from Karting like I did, go straight into Thunder Stock – you will do great.

TG: Who is an autograph you got as a kid that seemed to be a big deal to you at the time?

WVW: Alex Tagliani from the Molson Indy in Toronto. He was the only one that would stop and talk with all the kids and sign whatever you had.

TG: When you’re hanging around with other racers and tell old racing stories, what’s one of your favorites to tell (either something that happened to you or someone else)?

WVW: This is a good one! In 2011 when my car got t-boned on the track, and we had no way to get it on the trailer, we asked Jay (Liverance) from Affordable Towing and Recovery if he could take it home for us. When Jay dropped it off the next morning the car was in bad shape; roll bars were crushed, rear end and axles torn out, ball joints ripped out, and a lot of welding to be done. We asked him if he knew any good welders in the area who could help us out because we did everything in the driveway. We did not have a shop or garage. Guess what happened – “Affordable Towing Jay” is still mad at my dad for getting him into racing today (laughing). We could not afford a lot of the work, so we offered Jay a race car to help his son to get into racing in exchange for all his help. It used to be my back-up car.

TG: I’m asking each person to give me a question for the next interview. Dave Bailey asks “What is the significance of the number on your car?”

WVW: When I started in karting in 2004, I wanted the number 94 for the year I was born. We could not use that number because Sunoco 94 fuel was the main sponsor for all events, and that number could not be used. So I picked 04 for the year I started racing.

TG: …And do you have a question for the next person?

WVW: All my friends and people that I meet always say “Racing is easy – All you do is turn left and hit the gas. If you have the fastest car you will win!” What is your argument against this? Do you have friends like this, and how do you answer this?
