RACING CANCELLED FOR FRIDAY, MAY 26TH

OHSWEKEN, Ont. – May 26,2017 – Tonight’s scheduled races at Ohsweken Speedway have been officially cancelled due to poor and unsafe ground conditions. Speedway officials woke up to extremely wet ground conditions and held off cancelling with hopes of improvement. However, the track has also experienced continued rain fall and there has been no progress in drying the grounds as of 1:30pm.

“The infield is impassible for safety vehicles,” said track owner/promoter Glenn Styres. “Our safety response team would have trouble properly servicing the races this evening.”

Ohsweken Speedway will return to action next Friday, June 2 when NASCAR star Ken Schrader and the UMP Modifieds join the weekly racing action. For a full schedule of events and additional event information, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com.

KOOL KIDZ-CORR/PAK 360 SPRINT CARS
Alex Hill recorded her first career 360 Sprint Car win at Ohsweken to start the season last Friday night. With the Six Nations teenager away from the track this week, a number of drivers will look to become the second different winner in as many races. Scotland-based driver Dylan Westbrook currently holds the point lead ahead of Brantford’s Jake Brown, Caistor Centre driver Cory Turner and Fenwick’s Jim Huppunen.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Ryan Hunsinger got things rolling in the right direction for his Durnin Motorsports team with a win in the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car division on Friday night. The opening race to the division’s fourth season marked the first time in its history a B-Main was required due to a car count of over 20. Hunsinger will look to make it two in a row this week while the rest of the field looks for their first win of the season. Hunsinger holds a slim four-point advantage in the championship standings over Caledonia’s Jesse McDonald, Shone Evans of Scotland, Josh Shantz of St.Agatha and Mack DeMan of Mississauga.

MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS
Dave Bailey led only the final two laps of opening night, but it was enough to secure the opening night win and the points lead entering the second round of action on Friday. The defending track champion from Hagersville holds the early point lead over Jim Lampman, Shawn Chenoweth, Derek Lemyre and Karl Sault.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Jon Janssens continued last week’s trend of former champions finding victory lane when he stole the lead from runner-up Mark Bazuin with four laps to go. Entering the second week of action, Janssens leads Bazuin in the championship standings by just four points ahead of Gary Hodgson, Brandon Janssens and Matt Nuell.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Lucas Smith won the opening battle in the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bomber division when he held off defending champion Dustin Longboat for the win. Smith now holds the early points lead over Longboat, Adam Halbert, Gerald Burnham and Paul Longboat.

Race time is scheduled for 7:30pm. Pit Gates open at 5:30pm before Spectator Gates at 6:00pm. For additional event information or directions to the speedway, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com.

KOOL KIDZ-CORR/PAK 360 SPRINT CARS (19 entries)
Alex Hill and 2016 champion Mitch Brown started on the front row for the A-Main. Brown jumped out to the early advantage and pulled away from the field. On lap four however a broken torque tube bolt caused the rear end to snap, ending the night for the Brantford driver and handing the lead over to Hill.

On the restart Hill along with teammates Glenn Styres and Dylan Westbrook held down the top three positions. The three raced nose to tail and separated themselves from the rest of the field until lap 11 when Styres made a challenge for the lead in turn three. He held the lead momentarily, but Hill was able to drive back by Styres off of corner four and distanced herself the following lap. On lap 14 Styres over drove the third corner allowing Westbrook and Jake Brown to slip by.

The win was the first in a 360 Sprint Car for Alex Hill. Westbrook and Brown completed the top three. Heat race wins went to Mitch Brown, Glenn Styres and Dylan Westbrook while Dylan Westbrook also won the Ackland Insurance Top Gun Award.

MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS (25 entries)
2016 champion Dave Bailey led the field to the green flag and would take the early lead over outside pole sitter Chris Dickie in the opening lap of Thunder Stock main event. Third place starter Karl Sault quickly moved his way into the runner up spot and chased Bailey for the first 7 laps. Ryan Dinning included himself in the fight for the lead, but cut a tire while challenging for the top spot. Meanwhile, Sault was able pass Bailey on the outside and take the lead on lap 8.

Sault looked to be well on his way to the win until he tangled with a lapped car while coming out of corner four to take the two laps to go signal. The race remained green and Bailey would slip by to take the lead and the win. Veteran Jim Lampman finished second while newcomer Shawn Chenoweth claimed an impressive third.

Heat race winners were Ryan Dinning, Trevor DeBoer and Dave Bailey.

THE 2017 SEASON STARTS THIS FRIDAY!

by Tommy Goudge (May 17, 2017) – Ohsweken, Ontario – It’s finally here; Ohsweken Speedway’s 22nd annual Season Opener presented by Ackland Insurance will take the green flag this Friday, May 19 at 7:30pm!

Large fields are expected this season in all of the regular Friday night divisions, including the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars, Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars, Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers.

KOOL KIDZ-CORR/PAK 360 SPRINT CARS
A pair of wins and amazing consistency propelled Mitch Brown to his first 360 Sprint Car championship last season. Brown finished in the top ten in every feature he competed in at Ohsweken last season, and it will take a similar effort – or more – to successfully defend his title.

Teammates Dylan Westbrook and Glenn Styres lead the pack of challengers to Brown’s throne. Westbrook scored four feature wins at Ohsweken last season, along with the Rookie of the Year award and a runner-up finish in the championship standings. Styres will be looking to regain the form which saw him win track championships in 2014 and 2015.

Jake Brown, 2010 champ Dave Dykstra, two-time champ Jim Huppunen, and Mikey Kruchka all visited victory lane at Ohsweken last season and figure to be contenders in 2017. The Turners – Jamie, Cory, and Ryan – all finished in the top ten in the championship chase last season as well.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Jesse McDonald became the third different champion in the three year history of the Crate Sprint Car division in 2016, taking the Rookie of the Year award as well. McDonald scored three feature wins last season, while Holly Porter did the same on her way to finishing just 13 points behind McDonald in the championship standings.

Mack DeMan may well have been in the championship chase last season as well, but missed several races due to engine trouble. DeMan scored seven feature wins last season, while 2014 champ Ryan Hunsinger bagged three wins before engine problems took him out of title contention. Josh Shantz scored a win and a top five finish in the points standings last season, while Aaron Turkey, Mike Thorne, Shone Evans, Hannah Ferrell, and Jerry Hill made it into the top ten in points.

The fast-growing division will also see a large increase in car count this season, as more than a dozen rookies could be in attendance on any given night.

MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS

Dave Bailey and Ryan Dinning scored seven feature wins each in Thunder Stocks at Ohsweken last season, but Bailey prevailed for his second consecutive championship while Dinning ended up third. Karl Sault got one win, but consistency allowed the former Bomber and Mini Stock champ to stay in title contention and finish just 19 points behind Bailey in the final standings.

Jim Lampman and Wyatt Van Wart also went to victory lane last year, while Dereck Lemyre, Trevor DeBoer, and Jason Lungaro are among the returning drivers who claimed top ten finishes in the championship standings in 2016.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Brandon Janssens locked down his second consecutive Mini Stock championship last season, but Rookie of the Year award winner Brandon Crumbie gave Janssens all he could handle. Crumbie scored three feature wins to Janssens’ one and finished just 21 points behind in the final standings.

Mark Bazuin won five features last season, while Jon Janssens, Rob Hoskins, and Jake Bazuin are other returnees who went to victory lane in 2016. Jonathan Ayrton, Martin Schroder, Tim Deboer, and Matt Nuell are among the returning drivers who scored top ten finishes in last year’s championship chase.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Dustin Longboat won three features in 2016 and will be back to defend the Bomber championship this year, but he is sure to face stiff competition. Wayde Thorne won five times last year, while Paul Longboat scored four wins, and Jerry Burnham got two. Those drivers and several others are sure to provide plenty of entertainment in the always-unpredictable Bomber division.

2016 OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY SEASON IN REVIEW

by Tommy Goudge (May 15, 2017) – Ohsweken Speedway’s 21st racing season saw record car counts and close competition. An average of 121 drivers signed in for each of the 19 events which made up the season, combining for 225 heat races, 37 B-Mains, 93 A-Features, 44 different A-Feature winners…and five champions.

2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS
-Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Sprint Cars Champion – Mitch Brown (Brantford ON) – A pair of early wins and amazing consistency for the remainder of the season allowed Brown to become the seventh different champion in nine years of weekly Sprint Car racing at Ohsweken. Brown finished in the top ten in all of his 17 feature events at Ohsweken, including four podium finishes and nine top fives. A pair of DNF’s hurt Dylan Westbrook’s championship chances, but his four wins, eight podiums, and 11 top fives were good enough for second in the championship standings, along with the Rookie of the Year award.

-Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars Champion – Jesse McDonald (Caledonia ON) – McDonald was comfortable right away in his first Crate Sprint Car season, and went to victory lane after just six races. He claimed three wins in total, along with nine podium finishes and 13 top fives. McDonald became the third different Crate Sprint Car champion in as many years, and also claimed the Rookie of the Year award. Holly Porter was in title contention with McDonald throughout the season, and finished just 13 points behind in the runner-up spot. Engine problems kept Mack DeMan from contending for the championship, but he claimed feature wins in half his 14 events, plus ten podium finishes and 12 top fives.

-Ohsweken Speedway Thunder Stocks Champion – Dave Bailey (Hagersville ON) – Bailey and Ryan Dinning dominated the Thunder Stock division in 2016, as each claimed seven feature wins, but Karl Sault’s consistency put him in the title hunt as well. Bailey’s 12 top fives were the difference, as he ended the season 19 points ahead of Sault to claim his second consecutive championship. Jason Lungaro’s move to Thunder Stocks proved successful, as he finished eighth in the championship standings and won the Rookie of the Year award.

-HRW Automotive Mini Stocks Champion – Brandon Janssens (Woodstock ON) – Janssens prevailed in a tight championship chase for the second consecutive season, but this time it was Brandon Crumbie providing the competition. Janssens’ 16 top fives to Crumbie’s 14 ended up being the main reason for Janssens’ final advantage of 19 points. Crumbie’s three wins and 11 podium finishes were more than enough to lock down the Rookie of the Year award.

-Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bombers Champion – Dustin Longboat (Ohsweken ON) – The first championship on Dustin’s resume did not come easily, as he had to contend with his brother Paul, plus Wayde Thorne and Jake Maas. Dustin finished up 25 points ahead of Maas after the dust settled, while Joey Wilcox finished eighth overall and claimed Rookie of the Year honours.

SPECIAL EVENTS
-Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend – Friday, September 16, and Sunday, September 18: The four-wheeled season at Ohsweken finished with the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals for the 12th consecutive season. Rain on Saturday forced the Nationals finale to a Sunday night for the first time. Parker Price-Miller outlasted a pair of former CSCN winners in Steve Poirier and Jessica Friesen – and a barrage of Poirier slide job attempts – to take the $12,000 win and avenge a heartbreaking loss in 2015.

Friday’s Night Before the Nationals event found Jared Horstman and Mark Smith winning the Twin 15 lap features, while Steve Poirier won the Dave McLeod Memorial Shootout, and Yan Bilodeau won the Kevin Ward, Jr. Young Stars Challenge. Friday’s racing began with Paul Kinney winning a thriller over Shawn Donath and Dylan Westbrook in the rescheduled Empire Super Sprints A-Feature which was rained out on August 5.

-World of Outlaws Six Nations Showdown – Tuesday, July 26: The World of Outlaws series brought some of the world’s best Sprint Car drivers to Ohsweken for the 10th year in a row. The A-Feature was a great race yet again, as Donny Schatz prevailed in a three-way joust with Brad Sweet and Jacob Allen. Erick Rudolph went to Ohsweken’s victory lane for the first time after the DIRTcar 358 Modified race.

-Northern Crate Nationals – Monday, July 25: The Northern Summer Nationals switched to the Northern Crate Nationals for 2016, as all drivers competing in the event with a crate engine were eligible for a draw for a brand new crate engine from Strickland’s GMC. NASCAR star Kasey Kahne visited Ohsweken for the first time in his career, and kept a hard-charging Parker Price-Miller at bay to claim victory in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. Chad Chevalier was victorious in the first ever Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series event at Ohsweken, while John Waters took the win in the Go Nuclear! Late Model Series race.

WALL OF FAME
-The second annual Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame inductions celebrated the achievements and contributions of those who have helped Ohsweken Speedway to become a premiere racing facility, and inspired generations to come. The Bell family, Abel Castelein, Jay Mallory, and Jim Swing were honoured as 2016 Wall of Fame inductees in a special ceremony at the track on Friday, June 17.

COCHRANE, GEOFFREY, HILL, HUPPUNEN, & ROSS HEADLINE 2017 WALL OF FAME CLASS

by Tommy Goudge (May 9, 2017) – Ohsweken, Ontario – Ohsweken Speedway officials are pleased to announce this year’s class of inductees for the Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame. Jim Cochrane, Clinton Geoffrey Kruchka, Gale Hill, Tom Huppunen, and Adam Ross will be honoured on Wall of Fame Night on Friday, June 16 as Ohsweken Speedway celebrates the past, and looks forward to the future during the track’s 22nd season of racing.

Jim Cochrane was a mainstay of the Mini Stock division during the speedway’s early years, with his children later joining him on the track – and in victory lane. He was and continues to be a tireless advocate for the Mini Stocks and the speedway. Along with several feature wins, Jim was the first recipient of the Art Hill Memorial Award when it was created in 2000. Dedicated to the memory of the late Art Hill, the award is given annually to the Mini Stock competitor who demonstrates sportsmanship both on and off the track, strives to maintain the highest level of competition, and acts as an ambassador for Ohsweken Speedway.

Gale Hill has been a long-time proud supporter of local racing with his business, Gale’s Auto Aftermarket. On top of his sponsorship of teams, divisions, tracks, events, and more, Gale has gone the extra mile on many occasions in his efforts to help the local racing community. His relationship with Ohsweken Speedway and local racers goes well beyond the terms of any sponsorship agreement.

Tom Huppunen was among the first local drivers to get behind the wheel of a Sprint Car on a regular basis. Known as “The Fenwick Flyer”, Huppunen helped to carve a path which has now been followed by dozens of drivers and teams. Huppunen’s 11 career feature wins at Ohsweken currently rank him second all-time, while his resume also includes the 2009 360 Sprint Car track championship. He holds Ohsweken track records for both the eight lap distance, and fastest lap ever recorded in a 360 Sprint Car.

Clinton Geoffrey Kruchka and Adam Ross have served in a variety of roles at Ohsweken over the years. Although fans are most familiar with their announcing work, they have also worked behind the scenes in many different capacities, including Clinton’s current position as the speedway’s General Manager. The “Dual Airbags” team of Clinton and Adam brought professionalism and improved the fan experience at Ohsweken, with trackside reporting, webcasts, and many other innovations. Both are currently active with broadcasting work on nationally-televised NASCAR events.

About the Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame: The Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of those who have helped Ohsweken Speedway to become a premiere racing facility, and inspired generations to come. Selections will be made annually by the Wall of Fame committee, with potential honourees including (but not limited to) drivers, car owners, manufacturers, car builders, mechanics, sponsors, promoters, officials, sanctioning organizations, and media members.

The community is invited to submit nominations for induction to the Wall of Fame, and all nominations are given due consideration. The number of inductees in any given year shall be at the discretion of the Wall of Fame committee. The names of inductees for any given year are announced in early spring, and the official induction ceremony is held at Ohsweken Speedway on a selected race night during the subsequent season. The Styres Family, the Southern Ontario Sprints club, and Mike “Pinball” Giberson were selected for the inaugural class of Wall of Fame inductees in 2015, while Jay Mallory, Jim Swing, Abel Castelein, and the Bell family were inducted in 2016.

The 2017 Wall of Fame Night festivities are set for June 16, the anniversary of Ohsweken’s inaugural race in 1996. Nominations for the 2017 Wall of Fame class were accepted until February 28, 2017. To nominate a candidate for consideration for the 2018 Wall of Fame class, please contact media@ohswekenspeedway.com, or utilize the nomination form on the Ohsweken Speedway website at http://ohswekenspeedway.ca/?page_id=3279
