OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 14, 2019) – A busy night at Ohsweken Speedway saw a total of 123 cars roll through the pit gate on Core-Mark Wall of Fame and Kids Race night. A ceremony at intermission inducted five new people to the Ohsweken Speedway Wall of Fame, including John and Wendy Brush of Corr/Pak Merchandising, drivers Ryan Hunsinger and Rob Pietz as well as former track preparation guru Zeger Van Thuyl.

When the final checkered flag waved at the end of the night, it was Cory Turner who claimed victory with the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprints Cars and Nick Sheridan scoring a win with the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars. For the stock cars, 15-year-old Donny Lampman won his first career Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock Feature and Kyle Wert raced to the win with the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

Travis Cunningham and Aaron Turkey started on the front row for the 20-lap Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. The red flag waved on the opening lap though as Mike Thorne flipped in turn one causing damage to the top wing. Thorne was uninjured.

On the restart, Turkey jumped out front and paced a three-car breakaway that included Dylan Westbrook and Mack DeMan. By lap five, Westbrook was all over Turkey for the lead with DeMan in the mix. Two laps later with the leaders in heavy traffic, Westbrook got past Turkey in turn one to take over the lead and on lap nine, Turner got past both Turkey and DeMan for second.

Then on lap 11, Westbrook had opened a half straightaway lead and drove into turn one as he was about to put Shane Ross one lap down. Halfway through the corner, the car darted to the right as the steering box broke and sent Westbrook into the hay bales in turn two. Westbrook was uninjured.

That left the lead to Turner on the restart who pulled away from the field with DeMan in tow. The clean air helped Turner as he opened a five car-length lead. The advantage shrunk on lap 17 when Turner slowed briefly to avoid a lapped car, but DeMan wasn’t able to capitalize enough. Turner was smooth through the slower traffic over the final three laps to score his first win for the Burger Barn Racing team over DeMan, Scott Kreutter, Jim Huppunen and Aaron Turkey.

DeMan’s second-place finish was his fourth straight podium result to start the season, while Huppunen earned his fourth top-five in as many starts.  Cory Turner, DeMan and Kreutter won their qualifying heat races to start the night.

Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars

Brad Herron and Nick Sheridan paced the field to the green flag for the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars season opening feature. Herron jumped out to the early lead while third-starting Jesse Costa quickly wrestled second away from Sheridan.

The first caution of the race waved on lap three when Eric Gledhill lost everything off the right-front of his No.14 and managed to safely spin the car at the top of turn two while keep the car right side up. The ensuing restart saw Costa slide in front of Herron to take the lead in turn three. A lap later though the caution waved again when point leader Liam Martin spun in turn two and collected Caleb Wood as Dave McKnight Jr. slid into the scene as well. Wood was done for the night but Martin and McKnight were able to continue.

On the restart, Costa maintained his lead but Sheridan got past Herron for second before the caution waved again with nine laps complete when Al Gilletta Jr. spun in turn two. The restart produced a side-by-side battle for fourth between Matt Farnham and Lucas Smith. Farnham took full advantage and got past Smith and Herron immediately after to move into third.

Then, with seven laps to go, Costa slowed in turn two while leading after the car popped out of gear. The lead went to Sheridan with Farnham lining up right behind up with seven laps to go. Two laps following that restart and with 15 laps completed, the race was red flagged when Jesse McDonald flipped violently on his side on the front stretch after contact with Brad Herron.

The restart has Farnham at the point after taking the lead just prior to the red flag. He set sail away from Sheridan before the final yellow flag on lap 18 when McKnight spun in turn three. Sheridan stayed closer on the final restart, but Farnham of Tonawanda, NY proved too strong in his No.7ny to score his first Ohsweken Sprint Car win. However, following the race, Farnham was eight pounds too light at the scales and was disqualified, handing Sheridan his first career victory.

The infraction in the tech barn meant all drivers moved up one position, making the top-five Sheridan, Smith, Steven Beckett Paul Klager and Hannah Ferrell. Al Gilletta Jr., Eric Gledhill, Jacob Dykstra and Sheridan won their qualifying heats to begin the nights while DJ Christie and Baily Heard won the B-Mains.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks

Chris Dickie and Mark Bazuin brought the 27-car field of Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks to the line for the green flag. Bazuin jumped to the point, but was quickly reeled in by a caution when Chris Hale came to a stop in turn two with two laps complete. The ensuing restart saw Bazuin edge ahead of Dickie and 15-year-old Donny Lampman.

Three laps later, the caution flag waved when Dickie lost the hood off his No.1 after slipping to fourth behind Lampman and Mark Fawcett. The lap six restart saw Lampman jump into the lead while Bazuin fell into the clutches of Fawcett and Dave Bailey.

At the halfway mark, Lampman opened up a nearly two-second lead over Bazuin, Bailey, Fawcett and Ken Sargent. Lampman was on cruise control while the four-car battle for second continued behind him. Bailey took the second spot on lap 12 while Jonny Lowenberg was suddenly in the mix for third with Bazuin.

With three laps to go, Lampman maintained a three-second lead and Lowenberg’s fate was sealed after some contact appeared to take the rad out of his No.14. The race stayed green though and Lampman dominated the final laps to score his first career win holding off the defending champion Bailey and veteran Ken Sargent to accomplish the feat. Billy Bleich and Ryan Dinning rounded out the top-five. Dickie, Ryan Beagle and Bailey scored victories in the qualifying heats earlier in the night.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks

Christopher French and Mike Giberson were on the front row for the HRW Automotive Mini Stock 15-lap Feature. French led the opening lap before Jason Tolton stormed to the point on lap two. While Tolton led, he couldn’t distance himself from the field and by lap five he was in a five-car battle with Brent Walker, Cole Hardy, Wayde Thorne and Kevin Thorne all nose-to-tail for the lead. Two laps later, Tolton, Walker and Thorne battled three-wide off turn four with Walker emerging the new leader in the middle lane.

On lap eight, the caution waved when Sean Iftody slowed with a shredded left-rear tire. Walker and Tolton started on the front row for the restart with Walker holding the lead and Wayde Thorne driving into second. However, it was Kyle Wert who quickly jumped forward and opened a 1.8-second advantage with four laps to go before another caution after Iftody and Jason Dixon made hard contact at the top of turn two. After Jonathan Ayrton slowed on the restart, a second attempt saw Wert drive away again with Dusty DeBoer in second ahead of Walker, and Kevin Thorne.

Then, the red flag waved on lap 14 when Nick Masi lost his right-rear tire and rolled on his own in the middle of turns three and four. On the following restart, Dusty DeBoer stayed within a car length of Wert but that’s as close as he would get as Wert scored the win. Walker, Tim DeBoer and Wayde Thorne rounded out the top-five. Following the race, Walker was disqualified for being too light at the scales.

Cole Hardy, Kevin Thorne, Wayde Thorne and Wert raced to heat race victories, while Jason Dixon scored a checkered flag in the B-Main.
