OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 7, 2019) – Ohsweken Speedway had a full pit area with 125 cars signed-in for Friday Night Excitement featuring Minor Sports Night presented by the Rochester Knighthawks on Friday, June 7. It was a busy, but efficient night that saw four drivers visit Mister Transmission Victory Lane when the dust had settled. After the checkered flag had waved, it was Dylan Westbrook who scored a thrilling last lap win with the Kool Kids-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car feature and Jordan Hill claiming his first career Feature win with the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars. For the stock cars, it was Ryan Beagle who won the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock Feature and Nick Masi claiming victory with the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks.
Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars
Ryan Turner and Mack DeMan started on the front row for the 24-car and 20-lap Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. Turner led the opening two corners, but DeMan took over the point in turn four to lead lap one. DeMan paced the field and Dylan Westbrook charged forward from seventh to fourth before the caution waved with five laps complete when Cole McDonald slowed on the front stretch.
On the ensuing restart, Westbrook threw everything at Mitch Brown for third and eventually made the pass on lap seven by using the high lane in turn two. Then, Ryan Turner was under siege from Westbrook, but held off the defending champion until lap 11. By that time, DeMan had worked his way into lapped traffic and held a four-second lead until a caution with 12 laps complete after Holly Porter spun in turn two.
DeMan had two lapped cars between him and Westbrook on the restart. DeMan jumped out to a 10 car-length advantage on the restart, but Westbrook quickly evaded the slower traffic and set out to track down Westbrook. Scott Kreutter raced into third while Cory Turner ran fourth and Jim Huppunen was fifth with five laps to go.
With three laps to go, DeMan was back in slower traffic and trying to maintain a 1.4-second lead. Most of that lead was eroded on lap 24 when a slower car got sideways in front of the leader. At the white flag, the two were nose to tail and Westbrook built momentum in turns one and two. Down the backstretch, Westbrook was at full steam and threw a perfect slide job in turns three and four to steal the lead and win from DeMan on the final corner. The win was the third straight for Westbrook to start the Ohsweken season, while DeMan was on the podium for the third straight week as well. Kreutter rounded out the podium while Jim Huppunen and Cory Turner completed the top-five.
Mitch Brown, Westbrook and Kreutter won their qualifying heat races to start the night while Jake Brown won the B-Main.
Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars
Rob Neely and Jordan Hill paced the field to the green flag for the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars season opening feature. Hill grabbed the lead in turn two in the outside lane, but Neely remained close until lap four when he made contact with the inside retaining wall and damaged the front end of his No.74. On the same lap, the caution waved when DJ Christie and Caleb Wood came together in turn three.
The following single-file restart saw Hill with Jesse McDonald and Jacob Dykstra on his tail tank, but Hill maintained the point. At the halfway mark, the field had thinned out single-file with Hill holding the lead over McDonald, Dykstra, Dereck Lemyre and Jesse Costa. Hill didn’t hit lapped traffic until lap 14 and worked through it well while McDonald and Dykstra dueled tooth-and-nail for the second spot. That battle became a four-car onslaught as Lemyre and Nick Sheridan entered the fray over the final two laps.
Hill asserted his dominance to lead all 20 laps and secure his first career Crate Sprint Car win at Ohsweken while McDonald held off Dykstra for second. Lemyre was fourth while Nick Sheridan completed the top-five with his first career top-five finish. Costa, Liam Martin, Baily Heard, Steven Beckett and Brian Nanticoke completed the top-10.
McDonald, Dykstra, Lemyre and Liam Martin won their qualifying heats to begin the nights while Shane Stickel and Terry Baker won the B-Mains.
Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks
Kacey Huffman and Blake Bomberry Jr. brought the 27-car field of Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks to the line for the green flag. Bomberry led the opening lap, but the two front-row starters stayed side-by-side until Bomberry broke free on lap three with Ryan Beagle racing forward to second and Ken Sargrent in third.
The caution flag waved on lap six when Kaey Huffman spun in turn two and collected Rob Hoskins who had nowhere to go in the bottom groove. On the restart, Beagle took full advantage and raced into the lead while defending champion Dave Bailey pounced on an opportunity to jump into the top-five.
At the halfway mark, Beagle’s advantage was about five car lengths as he used the farthest outside lane in turns three and four to pace the field. Beagle maintained his advantage over the next five laps while Bomberry, Bailey and Jim Lampman raced under a blanket for second.
Beagle’s advantage proved enough to score the win, while Bomberry raced to a second-place finish and Lampman stole third from Bailey over the final two laps while Rewutzsky rounded out the top-five. Bomberry Jr., Beagle and Hoskins scored qualifying heat victories earlier in the night.
HRW Automotive Mini Stocks
Zach Buchwald and Jeff Elsliger were on the front row for the HRW Automotive Mini Stock 15-lap Feature, but it was third-starting Martin Schroder who jumped out to the early lead until he was reeled in by a lap two caution. The restart saw Schroder stay out front, but was quickly under heavy pressure from Ryan Hillar as a two-car breakaway developed out front.
The caution flag waved again on lap four when Fabio Olivier and Mike Sarantakos got together in turn two, setting up a busy restart at the front of the field that had Schroder, Hillar, Tim Nuell, Wayde Thorne and Dusty DeBoer in the mix. Thorne raced into second on the restart, but Hillar an Kyle Wert stayed close to create a four-car battle up front at the halfway mark.
With six laps remaining, the caution flag waved when flames ignited under the hood of Tim Jamieson’s No.188x. That setup a crucial restart where Schroder drifted up the track in turn one, opening the door for Thorne to lead lap 10 while Hillar and Nick Masi also got past. Schorder retired a lap later just before a caution when Bobby Tolton came to a stop in turn two.
The final restart of the night allowed Masi to race forward to the lead in a heated battle with Kyle Wert until the final corner. However, it was Masi who held on for the win over Wert, Tim DeBoer, Ryan Hillar and Dusty DeBoer.
Tolton won his heat race, but was disqualified for being too light at the scales. Jason Dixon, Wayde Thorne and Kyle Wert raced to heat race victories, while Tolton rebounded to win a B-Main along with Tim Jamieson.
