by Tommy Goudge (June 18, 2010) – Tom Huppunen ended Kids Night at Ohsweken Speedway on a good note as he took the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature win on Friday. Shayne Pierce claimed the ESSO Thunder Stock honours, while Trevor Goulding went back to Engine Pro Racing Victory Lane for the ESSO Mini Stocks division, Karl Sault got the Bomber win, and Ron Clark took the victory in the SOLTRA Lawnmowers event.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Brothers occupied the front row of the twenty lap Sprint Car feature on Friday night, and Tom Huppunen outraced his brother Jim to turn one and took off in the opening laps. Behind them, Keith Dempster moved from tenth on the grid to fourth in the first lap. Dempster then moved to second on lap four and began to chase down Huppunen, who was contending with slower traffic. Lap seven found Dempster making a move for the lead and getting it from Huppunen, but it would be short-lived.
The caution flag flew on lap ten for Mikey Kruchka, who slowed in turn two. When the green came back out, Huppunen and Dempster went at it once again, and Huppunen took over the top spot again on lap eleven. The final nine laps were a matter of survival for Huppunen and others on the rougher than usual surface. Huppunen – defending champion of the Corr/Pak division – kept his car underneath him and came home with the feature win, followed by Dempster, Kyle Moffit, Kevin Job, and James Evans. Dave Dykstra originally finished fifth on the track, but failed to go to the scales after the feature and was disqualified.
Heat races for the twenty-five car field were claimed by Jim Huppunen, John Riegling, and Keith Dempster
ESSO THUNDER STOCKS
Front row starters Shayne Pierce and Mike Thorne battled for the lead in the early going before Pierce took command out front. Thorne faded slightly and eventually spun in turn two, taking away his chance at a top five finish.
Billy Bleich and Jamie Cox were next to challenge Pierce for the win, but Bleich lost a tire in the late going, and Cox ran out of time in his attempt to chase Pierce down. The win was the first of the season for Pierce, defending champion of the division.
Heat races for the nineteen cars in attendance went to Thorne and Pierce.
ESSO MINI STOCKS
Mike Taylor and Abel Castelein began the fifteen lap ESSO Mini Stock feature on the front row, but with just a lap in the books Castelein suffered two flat tires on the front of his car. This left Taylor out front on the restart, but Steve Hess, Trevor Goulding, Kevin Hilborn, and others had moved through the field to challenge for the lead.
Hess took over the lead and stayed in front of Goulding after a couple of restarts, but Goulding was not to be denied and snuck by for the win. Hess settled for second, followed by Hilborn, Taylor, and Craig Erskine.
Heat races for the twenty-five car field were claimed by Hess and Goulding.
BOMBERS
Dave Patton led much of the wild twenty lap Bomber feature, but a restart in the final four laps helped Karl Sault grab the top spot. Sault held on for the win, his third of the season. The driver from Dundas also increased his point lead as a result.
Heat races for the twenty-two car field went to Patton and Jeremy Hughes.
