Ohsweken Speedway – July 22, 2005
The 10th Anniversary season of the SOS continued Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway and the huge crowd in attendance would not be disappointed. A large field of 29 sprinters were on-hand and when it was all said and done, Chuck “Cobra” Hebing of Ontario, NY was the star of the night taking victory in his Heat race, the Dash for Cash and topping off the night with an A-Main win.
The Feature event of the night got off to a rough start for a few drivers as Garry Evans spun in turn two taking out John Watson, Jamie Collard and Craig Downie. Watson was able to continue after changing a tire however the other three drivers were done for the night. The Downie machine suffered the most damage as he rolled it during the crash but fortunately, all the drivers escaped injury.
Fred Cade from Niagara Falls, ON, coming off his first-ever sprint car win in his Heat race earlier in the evening, paced the field to the green and took the early lead with Bob Crawford a close second. Mark Schulz, driving his brother’s car was in third, with the Current SOS point’s leader Adam West coming from his eighth starting position to take fourth at the conclusion of the first lap.
The story of the night however was “Cobra” Hebing. He was one of the few drivers who hit the set-up for the slick track conditions. Starting mid-pack, Hebing quickly moved through the field and by lap three was already in third. The final caution of the night came on lap eight when Schulz spun in turn two. Cade was still leading at this point but Hebing drove around the outside of Cade on lap nine and quickly opened up a huge lead. When the checkered flag dropped, Hebing had almost a half-a-lap lead over Cade with Crawford a close third. Rounding out the top five were Warren Mahoney and West.
Preliminary action saw Cade, Glenn Styres, Crawford and Hebing all winners in their Heat races. Nine drivers did battle in the B-Main for the four transfer positions with Chris Pyle, Jeremy Barnard, Les MacMillan and Willy Northcott all advancing to the “A”. Hebing also take top spot in the Fan-Dash for Cash and shared victory lane with fan Dave Galipeau.
Next up the SOS completes the double-header weekend with a trip back to the D-shaped oval of South Buxton Raceway.
