IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT WITH JEREMY MAY

By Carin Sundin

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (July 10, 2018) – Ohsweken Speedway officials are pleased to have HRW Automotive Mini Stock driver Jeremy May sit In The Driver’s Seat for this week’s segment.

Each week “In the Driver’s Seat” showcases a driver from the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock or HRW Automotive Mini Stock divisions and provides some insight into the man or woman behind the wheel.

Jeremy May returned to the Mini Stock division in his No. 16J Honda Civic Hatchback in 2017 after a two-season ride in the Thunder Stock division. May greatly appreciates everything his sponsors do for the No. 16J team and would like to extend his thanks to Sommer Tyme Spray Foam, Tim’s Tirecraft Hagersville, Pet Valu Binbrook, Pet Valu Red Hill, ABS Construction, Keepin Busy Designs, Main 88 Pizza Pub, Hagersville Discount Store, Treat Yourself, Tim’s Towing, May Farms, Flamboro Maintenance and Mechanical, Sweet Retrospect and Sharpe Signs & Graphics.

Special thanks to his hardworking crew including, girlfriend Elyse Leduc, Mom Penny May, Josh Robertson and the Turner Race Team.

How old were you when you started racing? What division/class?

JM “I started racing when I was 16. I started in the Bomber division with a 1993 Cavalier wagon. After two seasons in the Bomber division, I moved up to the Mini Stock class for two seasons and then decided to race in the Thunder Stock division for two seasons before coming back to the HRW Automotive Mini Stock division in 2017. Lots of variety and challenges!”

How did you get involved in racing?

JM “I’ve been in, around and at the track since before I was born! I spent my early years watching Don Turner, Jamie Turner and Steve DeVos (who’s currently the Flagman at Merrittville Speedway). I’m lucky enough to say all these guys are good family friends.”

What was your scariest situation in a race car?

JM “My scariest moment would have to be the Mini Stock wreck last summer on the night Tanner Fox ran. Fortunately, I escaped with minor injuries, but that wreck wrote off my race car.”

Do you get “race nerves” before a race?

JM “I have more race nerves on the way to the track then at the actual track. Once I arrive at the track I’m more focused on the race car and the pre-race things that need to be done.”

What is your favourite race moment to date (as a driver, fan, growing up, etc.)?

JM “As part of the crew for the Turner Race Team, I would have to say that all of the Turner bo’s first wins; Jamie’s Sprint Car win, Ryan and Corey’s first Thunder Stock wins would be my favourite moments.”

If you could race in any other class, which would it be?

JM “Easy….360 Sprint Cars!”

What advice would you give anyone who is interested in getting into racing?

JM “Find a good crew and some good sponsors. Clear your schedule as it takes up a lot of your time. Learn to eat, breath and sleep racecars. Sponsors and personal commitment are the things that you need to really make it happen.”

What driver do you most admire?

JM “Jamie Turner. I not only admire his abilities as a driver but also the fact that he is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. It’s his personality, on the track and off the track.”

If you could compete in any race, what would it be? Which track?

JM “The King Royal at Eldora Speedway. The first Sprint Car races I ever watched were at Eldora Speedway. I used to go down every year with my family.”

Do you have any race day or pre-race superstitions?

RT “I always pull the steering wheel towards me to make sure it’s actually lathed. I’ve seen it far too often when a driver gets out of their race car holding the steering wheel because it came off.”

Thank you Jeremy for sitting In The Driver’s Seat. We wish the May Motorsports No. 16J a safe and successful 2018 race season.
