IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT WITH MATT NUELL

By Carin Sundin

OHSWEKEN, Ont. – June 5, 2018 – Ohsweken Speedway officials are pleased to announce a new segment featuring the Thunder Stock and Mini Stock drivers. Each week “In the Driver’s Seat” will showcase a driver from the Thunder Stock or Mini Stock divisions and provide some insight into who is behind the wheel.

The first featured driver for this new segment is fifth year Mini Stock driver Matt Nuell. Nuell would like to thank his Sponsors who support his No.2 car, including www.MTNRacing.ca, Weather Tech, Gales Auto Aftermarket, Temple Bar Pubs, Whipper’s Fish and Chips, Tim’s Tire and Simington Automotive and his Crew Members: Arron Decker and Jason Blais.

How old were you when you started racing? What division/class?

MN “The first time I drove on a race track I was 17. It was the Mini Stock division at Ohsweken Speedway in Hanke Asia’s car.”

How did you get involved in racing?

MN “When I was a kid I would watch my Dad race at Flamboro Speedway Enduro race and often went on Saturday nights to watch the regulars”

What was your scariest situation in a race car?

MN “I got turned sideways towards the wall at the end of the front stretch at full speed. Fortunately, I rolled instead of hitting the wall. It all happened so fast, but for that split second I thought…this is gonna hurt!”

Do you get “race nerves” before a race?

MN “I used to when I first started racing weekly. By the end of the first season I was a lot more comfortable sitting in the car waiting to go out”

What is your favourite race moment to date (as a driver, fan, growing up, etc.)?

MN “There have been a couple of times my Dad and I have been out front together, I’d love for us to both make Victory Lane”

If you could race in any other class, which would it be?

MN “I’d love to drive a Super Late Model. Thunder Stock is the next realistic step though. My Dad and I have talked about putting one together”

What advice would you give anyone who is interested in getting into racing?

MN “Perseverance is key. Racing is a big commitment. To be competitive, it will take a lot of your time and money, and still disappoint you.”

What driver do you most admire? Do they influence your driving style?

MN “There’s a couple of drivers I liked growing up; Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace. I try to drive like Mark Martin, but I’ll put the bumper to you like Dale Earnhardt, if I have to! Rusty Wallace has my favourite number.”

If you could compete in any race, what would it be? Which track?

MN “A road course would be cool to try. I can turn right pretty good too. No specific track comes to mind.”

Do you have any race day or pre-race superstitions?

MN “No, I’m really not superstitious”

Matt and his MTN Racing team are currently in 9th position of the 2018 Point Standings. We wish Matt a safe and successful race season in his No. 2 Mini Stock.
