by Tommy Goudge (July 28, 2009) – The third time was the charm for Jason Meyers at Ohsweken Speedway on Tuesday night. In two prior visits, the California driver crashed, and then got rained out. Meyers took the lead on lap ten and never looked back on his way to his fifth World of Outlaws Sprint Car series feature win of the season. In ESSO Thunder Stock action, it was Billy Hogue claiming the victory, holding off points leader Shayne Pierce for the win.
Jason Sides and Craig Dollansky started the thirty lap World of Outlaws feature on the front row, and it was Sides – who claimed fast time honours earlier in the night – taking the early lead, while Jason Meyers and Donny Schatz shuffled Craig Dollansky back to fourth. The first caution flag of the event flew with four laps in the book when Cody Darrah spun, and Daryn Pittman hit the backstretch wall, ending his night.
Back under green flag conditions, Jessica Zemken continued her march to the front, as she had started on the tail and already gained ten spots when the caution flew. Up front, Sides continued to hold court, while Meyers and Schatz diced for the runner-up spot. Another caution flag for Darrah flew on lap nine just as Meyers began to pressure Sides for the lead, while Zemken moved into the top ten.
On the restart, Meyers went to work on Sides, making what would turn out to be the winning pass in turn three. Behind them, the rest of the field was using every inch of space available to dice for position, and finally ran out of room on the front straight during lap twelve. Getting the worst of the exchange were Tom Huppunen and Chad Kemenah, while Sides ran over debris from the accident and cut down his right rear tire. Kemenah and Sides would make repairs and return, while Huppunen was done for the night.
Back to green again, it was Schatz giving chase while Meyers continued to lead. At halfway, the leaders were working lapped traffic and Meyers was able to extend the gap, followed by Schatz, Dollansky, Steve Kinser, and Jac Haudenschild. Glenn Styres spun in turn two on lap nineteen to bring out the final caution of the event, moving Schatz back to within striking distance of Meyers once again.
Schatz closed to within just a few feet of Meyers on a handful of occasions during the last ten laps, but was not able to get by. With the white flag flying, Meyers made a bold move in lapped traffic to seal the victory, while Schatz came home second, followed by Dollansky, Steve Kinser, and Haudenschild. Rounding out the top ten were Joey Saldana in sixth after starting nineteenth, Jessica Zemken seventh after starting twenty-fourth, Jason Sides eighth after restarting at the rear of the field, Justin Barger ninth, and Danny Lasoski tenth. Jason Sides was the fastest of forty entrants in time trials with a lap of 14.695 seconds, while heat races were claimed by Kraig Kinser, Meyers, Schatz, and Barger. Zemken claimed the C-Main, while Wayne Johnson won the B-Main.
Twenty-seven cars were on hand for the ESSO Thunder Stocks companion event on Tuesday night, with Kirk Wilson and Shayne Pierce starting on the front row. Wilson led in the early going, while the field diced three and sometimes four wide behind him. Eleventh place starter Billy Hogue was the man on the move, utilizing the bottom groove to quickly make his way forward. Hogue took over the lead and was chased by Shayne Pierce and Billy Bleich through lapped traffic for much of the last half of the race. Hogue looked to have the race in hand with one lap to go, but a caution flag bunched the field and gave the rest of the field one last shot. On the restart, Pierce dove low in turn one but came up short as Hogue held on for the feature win, while Rob Disher nipped Bleich at the line for third, and Brad Herron came home fifth. Heat races were claimed by Ryan Dinning, Mark Fawcett, and Hogue.
Ohsweken Speedway and the World of Outlaws get back to action Wednesday night with the second running of the “Six Nations Showdown”, featuring another complete World of Outlaws Sprint Car series championship points event, plus the ESSO Mini Stocks! Plenty of good seats remain available. Adult reserved seats are $40, while Adult general admission tickets are $20.
