OHSWEKEN, Ont. (August 17, 2018) – Ohsweken Speedway officials are pleased to announce this week’s recipient of the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Performer of the Week award is Jason Tolton and the No. 1 HRW Automotive Mini Stock team.
The weekly award showcases a driver or team that exhibits outstanding effort and performance during Friday Night Excitement events at Ohsweken Speedway.
Last Friday, August 10 was Renway Energy Halloween in August night and saw another first-time winner in the exciting Art Hill Memorial / Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt 42-Lap feature for the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks. Jason Tolton, who started 16th, claimed the checkered flag and the $1000 winner’s prize in victory lane.
With Art Hill’s family in attendance to give the HRW Automotive Mini Stock drivers the command “to start your engines”, the drivers preceded the opening of the memorial race with the four-wide “missing man” formation.
The 26-car field then fell into position with Jay Moulton and Rob Twitchett leading them to the green flag. Moulton quickly took the lead over Twitchett as the Mini Stock field gave chase behind them going five-wide into turn two.
A caution at lap three saw Moulton restart in the lead position but by lap four Bobby Tolton drove around the outside to take the lead. Bobby Tolton drove away from the rest of the field by several car lengths with Moulton and Alex Riley battling for second while Jason Tolton and Dusty DeBoer raced for fourth.
Bobby Tolton was navigating lap traffic by lap 17 and continued to hold the lead until the restart after a caution on lap 20 when a flat left-rear took Bobby Tolton into the backstretch wall that effectively ended his night. Riley was fast on the restart to gain the lead with Moulton, Jason Tolton, DeBoer and Leroy Buscumb close behind.
Riley, who had come into the night as the Duel on the Dirt points leader, led for several laps but experienced mechanical issues with 18 laps left and was forced to pull off opening the door for fast side by side action between Moulton and Jason Tolton for the lead. Jason Tolton gained the lead when he drove around the outside of Moulton.
Despite cautions at lap 33 and 40, Jason Tolton successfully held the lead and won his first ever Mini Stock feature in the division’s biggest race of the year, the Art Hill Memorial.
In his victory lane interview, Jason Tolton told the crowd he had raced asphalt for 20-years without a win and in his first year of dirt track racing he finally garnered his first ever win as well as the $1000 cheque in the 42-lap Art Hill Memorial event.
Congratulations to Jason Tolton and the No. 1 HRW Automotive Mini Stock team on their very first win. Ohsweken Speedway wishes he and his team continued success for the remainder of the 2018 season.
