OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 28, 2019) – Ohsweken Speedway brought the June portion of its 2019 Friday Night Excitement schedule to a close with a dramatic night of action that saw 122 cars sign-in for competition at the freshly-prepared 3/8-mile oval. When the noise had tapered, Jim Huppunen found his way to Mister Transmission Victory Lane with the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars and Paul Klager scored his first career win in the Strickland’s Brantford Chevrolet Crate Sprint Car division. For the Stock Cars, it was Dave Bailey taking the checkered flag for the third time this season with the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks while the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks Feature was rained out.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

Jamie Turner and Holly Porter started on the front row for the 20-lap Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. Turner grabbed the early lead until third-starting Jim Huppunen, who was driving the Glenn Styres Racing No.0, drove to the point on lap three with an inside move in turns three and four.

The following lap, eighth-starting Mack DeMan moved into third and a lap later jumped into second past Turner. Huppunen’s lead was 1.5 seconds at that point, but saw it erased by a lap eight caution when Dan Nanticoke slowed in turn two. On the ensuing restart, DeMan had to deal with the lapped car of Shawn Sliter, but quickly dispatched of him and challenged for the lead while Dylan Westbrook and Scott Kreutter fought for third.

On lap 13, DeMan got past Huppunen off turn four but the two then raced side-by-side off turn two on the following lap. DeMan appeared to touch the outside wall on the backstretch as both drivers tried to race around a lapped car before wrecking hard into the outside wall on the front stretch and coasting into turn one. While the yellow flag was displayed, heavy rain began to fall and the race was called complete after 14 laps. Huppunen earned his first trip of the year to Mister Transmission Victory Lane, with Westbrook, Kreutter, Cory Turner and Derek Jonathan rounding out the top-five. Shane Ross, DeMan and Porter won qualifying heat races to start the night.

Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars

Hannah Ferrell and Paul Klager paced the field to the green flag for the Strickland’s Brantford Chevrolet Crate Sprint Car feature. A flurry of action started the race with cars staggered three-wide throughout the field before Eric Gledhill got the short end of the stick and spun in turn three. The ensuing restart was close again and led to a side-by-side battle for the lead between Ferrell and Klager. Ferrell led the opening lap, but Klager took over the point on the second lap.

Then on lap three, the red flag waved when Johnny Miller flipped in turn four after he and Dereck Lemyre made contact. Jacob Dykstra had nowhere to go and piled into the tumbling No.20. Miller was out of the car and okay, but the car sustained significant damage. Dykstra was able to continue without the nose wing.

One lap following the ensuing restart, a violent flip occurred on the front straightaway when Jesse McDonald, Shane Stickel, Josh Hill and Blaine Barrow tangled together. McDonald flipped end over end while Stickel rolled on to his side. Both drivers were able to get out of their car under their own power. Stickel, Hill and McDonald were all done for the night.

The following restart saw Klager continue to lead Porter, Jesse Costa, Liam Martin and Nick Sheridan in single-file fashion until Gledhill spun in turn two with a flat left-rear tire. When the race resumed, Klager established a 10 car-length lead as Costa slipped past Ferrell for second and Sheridan got past Martin for fourth.

By lap 14, Klager had worked his way into slower traffic, but with the field running mostly single-file, he was able to move efficiently past the slower cars to maintain his lead over Costa. Behind the leaders, Sheridan moved within three car-lengths of second until lap 18 when the slower car of Lofton Schuts saw the motor expire right in front of Costa, allowing Sheridan and Liam Martin to get by for second and third, respectively.

The hiccup for Costa allowed Klager to extend his lead and drive to his first career Crate Sprint Car win. Rounding out the top-five were Sheridan, Martin, Costa and Ferrell.  Stickel, Martin, Lemyre and Costa won their qualifying heats to begin the nights while McDonald and Darren Dryden won the B-Mains.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks

Derek Liverance and Matt Nuell brought the 28-car field of Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks to the line for the green flag in the second home track qualifier race for the Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt series. Teeple was able to jump to the early lead from the fourth starting spot until a caution at lap two for debris. Under the yellow, Teeple was forced to pit with the hood on his No.11 unlatched and blocking his view. That gave the lead to Chris Dickie on the restart and saw Mark Bazuin line-up to his outside.

Dickie jumped out to a slight advantage as Bazuin battled Jim Lampman for second. Lampman took the spot on lap five and on lap seven drove to the inside of Dickie in turn three to challenge for the lead. Immediately behind them was B-Main winner and 19th-starting Dave Bailey who made quick work of the field. On lap nine, a three-wide battle for the lead had Lampman in the middle of Bailey and Dickie. Bailey eventually emerged with the lead on lap 10 while Lampman tucked into second and Dickie slipped to third.

The caution waved before lap 11 was complete when Donny Lampman came to a stop. On the restart, Bailey chose the outside lane with Jim Lampman to his inside. Bailey held the lead while cars raced three and four-wide behind the front row starters, with Ryan Dinning the biggest mover jumping forward to third.

Over the next eight laps, Bailey hit cruise control with a sizeable 10 car-length advantage over Lampman while Logan Shwedyk and Ryan Beagle had moved into third and fourth. That lead was erased on lap 18 when Devin Habiuk spun in turn three and collected Liverance.

The green-white-checkered finish that followed the single-file restart proved no issue for Bailey who drove to his third win of the season. The victory was also his 24th career triumph at Ohsweken, moving him past AJ Lewis and Ryan Dinning for first on the track’s all-time Thunder Stock win list.

Shwedyk did make the most of the final restart and he jumped past Lampman to finish second. Beagle and Bazuin rounded out the top-five. Teeple, Shwedyk and Ken Sargent scored victories in the qualifying heats earlier in the night and Bailey claimed the B-Main victory as well.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks

Aidan Nigh and Mike Giberson were scheduled to be on the front row for the HRW Automotive Mini Stock 15-lap Feature. However, the race could not be run due to rain at the end of the night. The race will be made-up to start the night on Friday, July 5.

Nigh, Paul Longboat, Kevin Thorne and Ryan Hillar drove to heat race victories, but Longboat was light at the scales and was disqualified. Longboat came back to claim the checkered flag in the B-Main but was light once again.
