by Tommy Goudge (May 24, 2013) – 121 cars jammed the pits on Grisdale Racing Products night at Ohsweken Speedway for the “Sportsman Shootout”. The evening ended with Gary Lindberg, Glenn Styres, Bryce Richardson, Laura Hughes,, and Brady Longboat visiting Klotz Canada Synthetic Lubricants Victory Lane
DIRTcar SPORTSMAN MODIFIEDS
The DIRTcar Sportsman returned to Ohsweken for the first time in almost 5 years, and brought a competitive field of 19 cars. Brad Rouse led the early stages of the race, however a mid-race restart was beneficial for Gary Lindberg, as the Humberstone Speedway points leader grabbed the lead and cruised to the win. Rouse finished second, followed by A.J. Lewis, Darrell Farraway, and Jim Johnstone.
The race was red flagged on lap 15 for a hard crash in turn four by Adam Leslie. Thankfully Leslie walked away uninjured, but his #15 machine was left heavily damaged.
Heat races for the 19 car field were claimed by Gary Lindberg and Cody McPherson.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Glenn Styres visited Klotz Synthetic Lubricants of Canada Victory Lane after the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature for a second straight week. The win didn’t come easily though, as Dave Dykstra was in control until problems forced his car to the infield. Styres traded slide jobs with Tom Huppunen, and then made the winning move around Jim Huppunen following a late restart.
Dain Naida’s crew had a very busy night end on a sour note. The #07x crew changed a rear end, U-joint, and engine in time to start the feature, but then saw their car get upside down in the third turn on the first lap of the feature due to a stuck throttle. Fortunately Naida was unhurt in the incident.
Heat races for the 22 car field were claimed by Derek Jonathan, Jamie Collard, and Glenn Styres, while Collard also won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for accruing the most heat race passing points. Glenn Styres expanded his points lead with his 18th career Sprint Car feature win at Ohsweken.
AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Karl Sault dominated the Thunder Stock feature, but Bryce Richardson ended up claiming the victory after Sault’s machine failed post-race inspection. Richardson and Lee Winger raced hard for the second position behind Sault, with Richardson eventually prevailing with what turned out to be the feature-winning move. Winger was credited with the second position, followed by new points leader Jim Lampman, Mike Thorne, and Pete Reid in the Habiuk #5h.
Heat races for the 37 car field were claimed by Chris Dickie, Karl Sault, Brad Herron, and Lee Winger, while Mike Miller won the B-Main. Winger’s heat race-winning time of 2:36.078 set a new 8 lap track record for Thunder Stocks at Ohsweken.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
A first time winner went to victory lane after the HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature for a second consecutive week, as Laura Hughes drove to the win over opening night winner Davey Boughton. Alex Schuts finished third for the second straight week, followed by Jason Lungaro, and Robin Elliott. Mark Da Silva was uninjured after a spectacular flip in turn 3 early in the race. Boughton continues to lead the points standings.
Heat races for the 31 car field were claimed by Jason Lungaro, Davey Boughton, and Laura Hughes, while Josh Shantz won the B-Main.
GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Brady Longboat survived traffic to win the Gale’s Auto Aftermarket Bomber feature over Max Chechalk, Jesse McDonald, Tim DeBoer, and Wayde Thorne. Longboat took over the points lead in the process.
Heat races for the 12 car field were claimed by Brady Longboat and Dusty DeBoer.
