by Tommy Goudge (June 25, 2010) – Dain Naida made his second start of the season at Ohsweken Speedway count on Friday night, bringing home the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature win. Mike Thorne and Devin Habiuk got the wins in the “Twin 15” ESSO Thunder Stock features, Abel Castelein beat Kevin Hilborn to the finish line by inches in the ESSO Mini Stock feature, and Adam Reidel and Jeremy Hughes picked up Bomber feature wins.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
An all-American front row consisting of Dain Naida and point’s leader Kyle Moffit took the green flag for the twenty lap Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature. Naida got the lead and took off, intent on getting a feature win on his birthday, and making a week of hard work pay off.
Mike Ling began a charge through the field from his seventeenth starting spot as soon as the green flag dropped. By lap seven, he was already in eleventh, and looking for more.
Up front, Naida continued to open his lead, while Keith Dempster and Kyle Moffit fought over the second spot, and positions were up for grabs throughout the top ten.
During the second half of the race, Moffit fell slowly through the field, eventually finishing eighth. Ling got around Moffit for the fifth spot on lap thirteen, and past Travis Cunningham for fourth during the next lap. Lap fifteen saw Dykstra passing Dempster for second, and two laps later Ling got around Dempster and into third.
Naida was on a rail and took the feature win by 3.2 seconds over Dykstra, Ling, Dempster, and Cunningham. Kevin Job, Tyler Rand, Moffit, Kyle Patrick, and Tom Huppunen rounded out the top ten. Heat races for the twenty-nine car field were claimed by Job, Dykstra, Moffit, and Cunningham, while Ling won the “B” Main.
ESSO THUNDER STOCKS
The annual Twin 15’s for the ESSO Thunder Stock division proved entertaining again on Friday night. The first feature found Mike Thorne and Shayne Pierce on the front row. The two young drivers went at it for the lead from the drop of the green flag, with Thorne eventually prevailing for the win, while Billy Bleich got around Pierce for second after starting eleventh. Pierce settled for third, followed by Jamie Cox and Devin Habiuk.
Feature number two found some of the fast cars starting in the middle of the pack, but it didn’t take long for the battle at the front to re-emerge between Pierce and Thorne, while Bleich, Cox, Habiuk, and others tried to get in on the action. Most of the top runners chose the bottom groove, while Thorne pounded the top side lap after lap, losing ground in turns one and two but making it up and more in turns three and four.
The white flag flew over Pierce and Thorne racing side by side for the lead, but they made contact going down the backstretch. Thorne hit the wall hard and came close to rolling over, while Pierce continued on to take the checkered flag at the front of the field, followed by Habiuk. Thorne emerged from his damaged machine uninjured. Speedway officials determined that Pierce was given the black flag for rough driving, meaning Habiuk went to Engine Pro Racing victory lane for the first time in his career.
Jamie Cox got the second spot, followed by Mike Dooley, Ryan Dinning, and Lee Winger. Heat races for the twenty-three car field went to Dave Bailey, Thorne, and Pierce.
ESSO MINI STOCKS
Abel Castelein and Rob Slater were on the front row for the fifteen lap ESSO Mini Stock feature, but the field had not made it out of turn two when Dave Goodacre and Jake Brown made slight contact. Brown spun to a stop facing the wrong way, and was collected by Mike Sarantakos, and Steve Hess. All three cars received heavy damage and were done for the night. Brown emerged gingerly from his #10 machine favouring his left leg and was checked over by the medical team.
After a complete restart, Castelein got the jump and began to open a big lead. Kevin Hilborn, Trevor Goulding, Craig Erskine, and Mike Taylor all made their way into the top five quickly from deeper in the pack. Castelein was still ahead by a substantial margin while a great battle ensued between the other top five cars.
As the race moved along, Hilborn and the rest of the competitors began to reel Castelein in. Just a few laps remained when Hilborn caught up and he went to work trying to get his first feature win of the year. Hilborn and Castelein raced side-by-side out of turn four coming to the checkered flag, with Castelein getting the win by a scant few inches. Hilborn settled for second, followed by Goulding, Erskine, and Taylor. Newcomer Jason Coutu had a great run up from sixteenth to finish sixth, while recent returnee Rick Emberson went from fifteenth to seventh.
Heat races for the twenty-two car field were claimed by Castelein, Mike Evers, and Dave Goodacre.
BOMBERS
Another large field of Bombers signed in for action on Friday night, and officials decided to split the field and run two features for the infield-oval division. The first twelve lap affair found Kyle Andress and Shawn Ireland on the front row, but Adam Reidel made his way to the front and got the feature win over point’s leader Karl Sault, followed by Ireland, Kacey Huffman, and Andress.
Jesse McDonald and Jeremy Hughes started the second feature on the front row, and Hughes jumped out to the lead and took off. Hughes held on for the win over a fast-closing Craig Dowd, while McDonald settled for third, followed by Lee Hils, and Troy Smith.
Heat races for the eighteen car field were claimed by Sault and Hughes.
