SIDES SLIDES TO “SIX NATIONS SHOWDOWN” VICTORY AT OHSWEKEN

by Tommy Goudge (July 29, 2009) – It seems Jason Sides has taken a liking to Ohsweken Speedway. The Bartlett, Tennessee driver claimed his second feature win in three career starts at the three-eighths mile clay oval on Wednesday night during the second running of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series “Six Nations Showdown”. In ESSO Mini Stock action, Steve Hess held off a determined Trevor Goulding to claim his first feature win of the season.

Jason Meyers and Craig Dollansky started the thirty lap World of Outlaws feature on the front row, and it was Dollansky jumping out to the early lead, while Sides got by Meyers for the runner-up spot before the first lap was completed. With three laps completed, the caution flag flew for the stopped machine of Dave Dykstra in turn four.

Back under green, Sides began to put the pressure on Dollansky, and made what would turn out to be the winning move coming out of turn four on the sixth lap. That move very nearly resulted in disaster as Sides used a slide job on Dollansky to take the lead, and the two made contact in the process. Dollansky did well to hang on and stay within striking distance of Sides, while lapped traffic loomed ahead. Another caution flag on lap ten gave Sides a clear track, but an open red flag on lap sixteen for a Brian Ellenberger rollover allowed all of the teams to work on their cars. Many drivers and teams had planned for the track to dry out as the feature wore on, but the Ohsweken clay had other ideas, forcing them to adjust accordingly.

Back under green again, Sides got off to a strong start and was back in lapped traffic quickly. Donny Schatz was one of the drivers who made changes during the break, and was very competitive in the second half of the event, but a prolonged battle with Dollansky over the runner-up spot cost him too much time, and Sides was able to cruise to the victory without a serious challenge. Schatz settled for second, while Dollansky finished third, followed by Jason Meyers, Jac Haudenschild, Lucas Wolfe, Cody Darrah, Danny Lasoski, Kraig Kinser, and Steve Kinser, who finished outside of the top four in Canada for the first time in his long and distinguished career.

Four track records were broken on the fast Ohsweken surface on Wednesday night, including Joey Saldana with a new time trial record of 12.420 seconds in qualifying for the thirty-nine car field, while Jason Meyers set eight lap heat race and six lap dash race records, and Wayne Johnson completed the twelve lap B-Main in record time. Heat race victories were claimed by Dollansky, Meyers, Daryn Pittman, and Schatz.

Wyatt Van Wart and Mike Taylor started the ESSO Mini Stock feature on the front row, but all eyes were on division points leader Mitchell Brown, who started outside row two. Trevor Goulding and Steve Hess quickly moved up as well, and would become the focus of attention later in the event after Brown dropped out. Goulding and Hess spent much of the last half of the fifteen lap feature side-by-side, but it was Hess coming out with the victory after a close call in lapped traffic with the white flag flying. Goulding would hold on for the runner-up spot, followed by Kevin Hilborn, Matt Deschamps, and Ethan Martin. Heat race victories for the nineteen car field were claimed by Deschamps and Goulding.
